有些副詞具有兩種形式，一種與形容詞同形，一種是形容詞加後綴-l y構成的。這兩種形式的副詞有時含義相同或略有不同，有時則意義完全不同。比較下面幾組詞。
1.most和mostly
most意為「最…」；mostly意為「主要地，大多數地」
The head is the most sensitive part of the body. 頭是身上最敏感的部位。
The snake hunts mostly at night. 佘主要在晚上捕食。
The guests are mostly friends of the bride. 客人大多數都是新娘的朋友。
2.close和closely
close意為「靠近，近」；closely意為「細心地，嚴密地」
He stood close to the wall. 他靠牆站著。
He was following close behind. 他緊跟在後面。
Watch what I do closely. 仔細觀察我所做的。
The prisons were closely guarded. 監獄被嚴密的看守。
3.dead利deadly
dead sure的確
dead tired極其
dead ahead正好
dead drunk完全地
stop dead突然地
He was deadly pale. 他的臉是一般的慘白。
He is deadly sleepy. 他非常的困。
