在今天的節目中,我們將教給大家「Claim」這個單詞。C-L-A-I-M, claim。它既可以作為動詞也可以作為名詞。做動詞時,我們最常使用的它的一個釋義是「宣稱、聲稱、斷言」。作為名詞時,「claim」通常被譯為「聲明」。
Let me tell you two examples of the word. 「He claims that he was not given a fair hearing.」 In this sentence, "claim" is used as a verb, which means 「to say that something is true although it has not been proved and other people may not believe it」. Another example of this word is 「The singer has denied the magzine’s claim that she is leaving the band」. We can obviously find that the "claim" in this sentence is a noun which means 「a statement that something is true although it has not been proved and other people may not agree with or believe it」.
今天我們還將給大家介紹「claim」的一個特殊用法,不知道大家有沒有聽過這句話——「And having perhaps the better claim」,在這句話中「claim」被翻譯為「理由」。這句話出自美國詩人羅伯特·弗羅斯特創作的文學作品《一條未走的路》。羅伯特·弗羅斯特是20世紀最受歡迎的美國詩人之一。在這首深邃的哲理詩中他竭力展現了現實生活中人們處在十字路口時難以抉擇的心情。
Today we're going to introduce a special use of the word "claim". In the phrase "And having perhaps the better claim", where "claim" is translated as "reason". This sentence comes from the American poet Robert Frost's literary work 「The Road Not Taken」. Robert frost was one of the most popular American poets of the 20th century. In this profound philosophical poem, he tries to show the tangled feelings of people at the crossroads in real life.
Now, let’s enjoy The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost.
朗讀文本:
下面讓我們欣賞《一條未走的路》羅伯特·弗羅斯特。
The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Thank you for listening. Until next time.
