W: Why not?
M: It’s too dirty. They won’t be able to find people to work down coal mines in the future.
W: They』ll invent new kinds of machinery.
M: Nonsense. The only s ort of power they』ll use in the future is atomic power.

W: Yes, I did.

W: Just the facts.
M: What time did it happen?
W: It must have been sometime between 12:00 and 1:30 because I was home until almost 12:00 and I just got back at 1:30.
M: What did they get?
W: Well, what I know now is some jewellery and the television.
M: OK. Good, you’re making a list. By the way, did you have your belongings marked?
W: Yes. My husband put his name on the TV.
M: By the way, where is your husband?
W: He’s on a trip to Canada. And I haven’t told him about the robbery.
M: I see, where did you put your jewellery?
W: I put it in the refrigerator. But all my good jewellery is in the safe box in the bank.
M: OK. I』ll be in touch with you as soon as we have found anything about it.

M: How did you like the fireworks last night?
W: I really didn’t enjoy them too much. There was such a big crowd that we couldn’t get very close.
M: I thought you were going early.
W: We did, but even though we got there at ten to eight, the park was already filled with lots of people. It was so crowded that we had a hard time finding a place even to stand.
M: That’s too bad, because the fireworks were really wonderful.
W: What did you do? How did you manage to get a good view?
M: We went early. We decided to have a picnic so we』d be sure to get there early enough to find a good place.
W: I guess that’s what I should do next Fourth of July.
M: We found a place on top of some rocks where nobody could get in front of us.
W: What did you do about going home? I』ve never been pushed so much in my whole life!
M: Oh, we stayed around for an hour or so, but they ran extra buses until midnight, so we didn’t have any problem.
W: I think you were lucky.
M: It wasn’t lucky. It was good planning. You』ll have to come with us next year.

Good morning and welcome to BBC news in special. Have you ever heard of a four-year-old college student? But this is true of Nicholas MacMahon, who is now studying at college because he is too intelligent for school.
Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At eighteen months he took telephone messages for his parents. At two he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak.
「We knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak, he corrected my spelling,」 said his father. He tried two different schools, but he was bored and unhappy and his parents decided that he couldn’t stay there. His teachers did not have enough time to prepare special lessons for Nicholas. The MacMahons had no idea what to do with him. Then the West London Institute offered to help. Nicholas spends some of his time there, and also studies at home. He reads the newspapers every day, and he can play the violin well. 「We don’t have any social life,」 Mr. MacMahon said, 「Nicholas is our life. He is a clever child and we want to help him in every way.」
