#Census2020 - To count everyone, U.S. census is in many languages
The U.S. government is offering its census in more than a dozen languages to ensure that everyone is included in the nation’s once-a-decade population count that informs representation in Congress and spending of public resources.
「By giving households the option to respond online or by phone in English and 12 additional languages, we are giving residents the tools they need to be counted and encouraging them to shape their futures,」 Steven Dillingham, director of the U.S. Census Bureau, said in a March 9 statement.
According to an American Community Survey conducted by the Census Bureau, Spanish is the second most common communication language in the United States after English, reflecting the influence of immigration structure on the state of the country. However, this questionnaire also uses German, French, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, etc. to ensure that 99% of people can answer questions in the language they use at home.
About 13 million households, or about 9%, will receive bilingual questionnaires in English and Spanish. The Census Bureau also provides videos made in 59 non-English languages, including American sign language, to guide how to fill out the questionnaire. Census takers—many of whom are bilingual—will visit residents who have not responded to the questionnaires sent earlier.
Since 1790, the United States has conducted a census every ten years in accordance with the requirements of the Constitution. The results of the statistics on the number of people living in each household on April 1 will be a factor in determining the number of representatives of the U.S. House of Representatives in each state. This result is also related to government funding for key service projects, such as fire stations, schools, hospitals, and roads and bridges. These data will be used for macro-statistics to keep specific family information confidential.
