前幾天，外教Emma接水回來，對一個同事說：
「飲水機沒水了，你幫忙換一下吧！」
同事隨口說到：「I can't help it.」
老外愣在那裡許久，冒出一句：
「怎麼，你有喜歡的人啦？」
這到底是怎麼回事？
「I can't help it」難道不是「我幫不了忙，我幫不了它」的意思嗎？
在解釋這個表達之前，我們先來看看這句話中，最重要的一個詞：「help」。
當看到「help」，小夥伴們腦中的第一反應，肯定都會是「幫助」；
在劍橋詞典中，它的釋義為:
to make it possible or easier for someone to do something, by doing part of the work yourself or by providing advice, money, support, etc.
儘可能地幫助別人，為別人提供工作、需要的建議、金錢和支持等...
如：
How can I help you?
我該如何幫助你呢？
can I help you?
你需要幫助嗎？
Thanks very much for your help.
非常感謝你的幫助。
He has helped to raise a lot of money.
他幫著籌到了很多錢。
此外，在美式英語中，「help」還有「傭人，幫傭」的意思。
The help didn’t come this morning.
傭人上午沒來。

如：

我忍不住在想，這完全是在浪費時間。

我忍不住琢磨他怎麼樣了。
這裡，我們可以看到：
在「I can’t help it」中，「help」用作形容詞，被「can’t」所修飾。
這裡，涉及到一個小小的語法知識：
can，是情態動詞；而can't，則是其否定形式，後面通常接動詞原形。
而can’t/couldn't help，是一個固定搭配，表示「忍不住做某事」。
再來看「can’t help」在英文詞典中的釋義：
to not be able to control or stop something.
不能控制或者停止某些事情。
所以，「I can’t help it」表示的是「我忍不住了，我情不自禁」，而不是「我不能幫忙」。
如：
I can not help laughing.
我實在不能忍住笑。
I can not help thinking.
我不能忍住思考。
I can't help but love you.

首先，「can’t help to do」是指「不能幫助做某事」；
