「託福是語言測試」，這是一句對於託福考試的精闢而流行的總結。託福考試要求考生具備什麼樣的語言水平?今天，文都國際教育小編就用託福寫作的兩個例子來對上面的問題做一個解析。
我們先來看託福獨立寫作(Independent Writing)對於滿分文章(5分)的一點要求：
Is well organized and well developed, using clearly appropriate explanations, exemplifications, and/or details
綠字部分說的是，我們的文章要有合適的例子作為支持。「例子要合適」，這看起來是再簡單不過的要求，但卻反映了託福語言測試的一個要求：我們語言的內容要有基本的邏輯，不能用不合邏輯的例子來支撐文章。
例如下題：
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Always telling the truth is the most important consideration in any relationship.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
在找尋分論點時，很多同學都會想到「善意的謊言(white lies)」。善意的謊言在關係的維繫中同樣重要，這一個分論點不錯。而為了支撐這一點，不少同學又會想到用「醫生不告訴病人真相」這個例子來支撐。於是就有了下面這句話：
Many doctors do not tell their patients the fact that they are really sick, so the patients will recover; on the contrary, if the patients are told the truth, they will become much sicker and even die from fear.
這段話看似有道理，字數也不少，但卻犯了託福寫作評分的大忌--沒邏輯，也因此算不上合適的例證(appropriate exemplification)。
啥?沒邏輯?我怎麼覺得邏輯非常通順啊?!
讓我們仔細想想，上面這個例子雖然看起來很符合常識，但其實經不起推敲：為什麼醫生只要把病情的真相告訴病人，病人就一定會(注意原文中will這個詞)病情惡化甚至死亡?而相反，醫生只要隱瞞病情，病人就可以痊癒?這樣一看，似乎是醫生的一句話就能定生死，而醫生的醫術，醫療設備和其他外部條件完全不起作用。
這樣想想，上面這個例子就顯然不符合邏輯了，我們也就能夠明白為什麼它不是一個合適的例證了。
那麼，應該如何修改呢?--很簡單，我們只要改動幾個詞，加上一兩句話，整個段落的邏輯就顯得比較合理了。
如下：
Many doctors do not tell their patients the fact that they are really sick so that their patients may keep a good mood, which may further enable them to recover; on the contrary, if the patients are told the truth, they may suffer from shock, sorrow and despair, and may even refuse to receive any further treatment, which could ultimately lead to the deterioration of their sickness.
在上一段中，我們主要做了兩個修改：
把will這樣表示可能性極高的詞替換成了may, could這樣更加委婉的詞，讓說理顯得更加留有餘地;
對病情起到作用的並非是醫生的話，而是病人在聽了醫生的話之後的態度和反應，原文段中正是沒有認識到這一點才會讓邏輯顯得很突兀。因此在修改中，我們加入了綠色的句子，讓邏輯顯得更加通順，更加符合常理。
修改之後的文段就比較符合邏輯了，這也就貼合了託福寫作測試的語言的基本要求：語言的內容要有基本的邏輯。
另外，很多同學過分關注託福語言，這也是不對的。例如，如果我們把原文改成這樣：
The concealment of sickness from the patients by some doctors will ameliorate the illness; what is in great contrast, however, is that the revelation of the illness is bound to exacerbate it and even trigger death.
這一段中，concealment, ameliorate, revelation, exacerbate, trigger等大詞層出不窮，乍一看讓文章很亮眼。但實則文章語言在內容上就缺乏基本的邏輯，即便有這樣的GRE式的語言，也很難讓文章得到高分。學過GRE再去學託福的同學尤其應該重視這一點。
