I』d like to talk about a traditional Chinese medicine called Dong Chong Xia Cao. If we translate that name into English, it would be Winter Worm Summer Plant. As the funny name suggests, in winter, it is actually a worm, but when summer comes, after the worm is dead, there will be plant growing out of the worm’s body. And that’s how it got the name.
This precious medicine can cure certain diseases effectively, for example, cough, back pain and sore knees. Also, it can strengthen our immune system, and recently, researchers found out that it has anti-cancer effect.
In the past, only the royal family could afford this medicine, 『cause the price was ridiculously high, but they are not pricey for no reason. You see, those plants could only be found high in the mountains in Tibet, and it took a lot of time and effort to pick and gather them. Some local people even risked their lives because of the harsh environment. Now, although the price is still pretty high, with the development of cultivation techniques, it’s much more reasonable, which means you don’t need to be a millionaire to buy this medicine.
This plant is really important to China 『cause it’s a valuable part of our traditional Chinese medicine. And in the past, even today, many patients have been treated with it and fully recovered.
