(To score) An own goal

This phrase is often used in football to talk about a player who puts the ball into his own team’s goal. Due to his (usually accidental) actions, he has put himself and his team in a position that is worse than before. However it is also used to talk about anybody that does something that is damaging to themselves or their company.（Philip Simpson）
