Girl Scout leaders hope the new approach will help the group survive new challenges, like declining membership.
Over the past decade and a-half, the number of Girl Scouts has dropped from nearly 3 million girls to about 1.76 million. There are fewer adult volunteers, too. Megan Ferland who leads the Girl Scouts of Western Washington says Scouts are engaged in new activities like robotics and technology. I do believe that STEM for girls is critically important, because STEM careers are projected to be vitally important in over the next several decades, and there are not enough women in those careers and projected to not be in in those careers.
The Boy Scouts started admitting girls into its programs last year, but the Girl Scouts will not follow suit. Remaining all-girls club is just fun with male in trend. I think that Girl Scouts really gives a unique experience for all girls because it’s like an all-girls environment. I think that’s what’s really important because it gives girls a chance to work with other girls and to work with female leaders to find their own sort of empowerment.
Mai-Linh Tran has been a Girl Scout since she was in the first grade. This year she won one of the organization of highest honors—the elite Gold Award for her work in robotics. In order to build equity, you need to start at the base, and that means with kids, so Girl Scouts is a really great opportunity because it allows kids from of all ages, like, even as like a first grader, girls are getting this opportunity to find their own power. Here in this newly opened year-round camp in Dallas-the STEM center of excellence—girls of all ages explore various programs and gain skills in STEM fields. They also engage in more traditional activities, like community service and selling cookies.
