再過幾天，充滿魔幻的鼠年就要過去，
牛氣騰騰的牛年即將到來！
我們比較熟悉「牛」的英文名是 cow，
那「牛年」難道是 cow year？
當然不是啦！
除了 cow，其實 bull, ox, cattle, buffalo, calf
都有「牛」的意思，
1. cow 奶牛，母牛
尤指供產奶的乳牛或專門供食用的肉牛
a dairy cow 奶牛
2. bull 公牛
美國NBA公牛隊就是 Chicago Bulls
3. ox （泛指）牛
需要注意的是，ox 複數形式是 oxen
4. cattle 牛的總稱，是集合名詞
beef / dairy cattle 肉／奶牛
這麼多「牛」，那「牛年」的「牛」應該用哪個呢？
答案是 ox
「牛年」的表達就是：Year of the Ox
如果把「牛年」翻譯成 Year of the Cow
或是 Year of the Bull
這樣牛年就成了母牛年或公牛年了，
bull，cow，buffalo，calf 等詞
都表達的是某一特定種類的牛，
用作牛年的翻譯往往會造成歧義。
所以要用牛的總稱：cattle 或 ox，
但 cattle 專門指農業領域中的牛，
算是某種意義上的專有名詞，
不太適合用在「牛年」裡進行泛指。
「牛年」用 ox 來表示，一般不會鬧出笑話，
另外，西方人對牛 ox 是很敬重的，
也讚許它的強健和勤勞。
所以，「牛年」翻譯成
Year of the Ox 就更妥當，
大家可別看錯了，不是「人頭馬 xo」，是 ox
十二生肖裡很多動物的表達
都跟我們平時說的不大一樣。

zodiac 是西方的「星座」，前面加上 Chinese，
就可以指中國的生肖了。
各個年的英文我們大致可以這麼用短語表達：
Year of the Rat 鼠年
Year of the Ox 牛年
Year of the Tiger 虎年
Year of the Rabbit 兔年
Year of the Dragon 龍年
Year of the Snake 蛇年
Year of the Horse 馬年
Year of the Goat 羊年
Year of the Monkey 猴年
Year of the Rooster 雞年
Year of the Dog 狗年
Year of the Pig 豬年
「我屬牛」英語怎麼說呢？
I was born in / under the Year of ……
My zodiac animal is ……
My animal sign is ……
I was born in/ under the Year of the Rabbit.
我屬兔。
My zodiac animal is Rooster.
我屬雞。
My animal sign is ox.
我屬牛。
當詢問個人的屬相時，通常會說：
What animal sign were you born under?
可以回答說：
My Chinese zodiac sign is the Ox.
或者說 I was born in the year of the Ox.
在英語中有很多與「牛」相關的有趣俚語，下面我們一起看看吧！
乍一看這個俚語，
相信很多小夥伴都會按字面意思，
翻譯成「有一頭奶牛」，
但這和正確答案風馬牛不相及。
其實 have a cow 的正確意思是：
大驚小怪、激動、生氣
就像牛脾氣一樣。
這個句式因為《辛普森一家》流行起來的，
裡面的Bart超愛說這一句：
Don’t have a cow! 別生氣，別大驚小怪
I thought he was going to have a cow when I told him I'd lost his key.
當我告訴他我丟了鑰匙時，我以為他會大發雷霆的。
這裡 china 是小寫，指的是「瓷器」，
這句話從字面翻譯過來，
意思就是「一隻公牛進了瓷器店」。
如果一頭噴著鼻息、怒氣衝衝的公牛
闖進擺滿精緻瓷器的店裡，
那情況肯定會非常糟糕。
所以 a bull in a china shop 是用來形容：
笨手笨腳的人，魯莽闖禍的人
We told her it was a delicate situation but she went into the meeting like a bull in a china shop.
我們告訴她情況非常微妙，但她開會時還是冒冒失失的。
take the bull by the horns
字面上的意思是「捉住公牛的角」，
這是多麼大膽的行為啊，
所以這個表達的意思就是：
當機立斷，大膽應對困難
Why don't you take the bull by the horns and tell him to leave?
你為什麼不當機立斷，直接讓他離開？
