Hedgehog had just finished building herwinter nest under the old apple tree. Not too large and not too small. Justright for a nice long winter sleep.
一棵老蘋果樹下，小刺蝟剛剛建好了她過冬的小窩。不大，也不小，正合適在裡面美美地睡上一個冬天。
Suddenly a juicy red apple landed on herback. "Ouch!" squeaked Hedgehog.
突然，一個鮮紅多汁的大蘋果落在了她的背上。「哎呦！」嚇得小刺蝟吱吱叫。
She curled into a spiny ball, hoping itwould fall off. But when she uncurled, the juicy red apple was still there.
小刺蝟縮成一個球，希望大蘋果自己掉下來。可是，當她伸開手腳時，鮮紅多汁的大蘋果仍然留在她的背上。
Hedgehog tried to squeeze herself and theapple into the beautiful new nest.
But could she get in?
No,she could not. Not with the apple on her back. The nest was too small.
小刺蝟又試著背著蘋果一起往她漂亮的新窩裡面鑽。
可是，她鑽的進去嗎？
不，背著大蘋果可鑽不進去。這個窩太小了。
Oh dear!
噢！我的天哪！
Squirrel, scurrying past with an armful ofbrown nuts, stopped to help.
小松鼠兩手抱著滿滿的棕色堅果，正一路小跑著趕路，看到小刺蝟。他停下來幫忙
"Stand still. I'll push the appleoff." he said. "
站著別動，我幫你把大蘋果推下去。"他說。
And he pushed. And he heaved.
於是，他推啊推，拉啊拉。
And he struggled. And he tugged.
扭啊扭。抓啊抓。
But the juicy red apple stayed where itwas. Worse still, three of Squirrel's brown nuts got caught in Hedgehog'sspines. So now she had a juicy red apple and three brown nuts on her back.
可是，那個鮮紅多汁的大蘋果依然好好的呆在小刺蝟的背上。更糟糕的是，小松鼠懷裡的三個棕色堅果也扎在小刺蝟刺兒中間拔不出來了。這麼一來，小刺蝟背著一個鮮紅多汁的大蘋果又加上三隻棕色的堅果。
"Oh dear!" wailed Hedgehog."Winter is coming and I can't get into my nest. What will I do?"
"Try rolling on your back."snorted Pig, trotting up." That'll get rid of them."
"噢。我的天啊！"小刺蝟哭了起來，"冬天就要來了。我鑽不進我的小窩去了。我該怎麼辦呀」「你在地上打個滾兒試試。」小豬哼哼地，一路小跑過來了。這樣你就能把他們蹭掉了。
「Has it all gone?」sheasked hopefully. Scrabbling to her feet.
Pig shook his head. 「No.」
The juicy red apple and the three brownnuts were still there. So were a small green pear and a crumpled brown leaf.
「Oh dear!」 sighedHedgehog, rolling her eyes.
「掉了沒有？」她滿懷希望地問，小手小腳在地上撲騰。
小豬搖了搖頭。」沒掉。」
那個鮮紅多汁的大蘋果和三隻棕色的堅果依然好好的呆在小刺蝟的背上。而且，還多了一隻小小的青梨和一片皺巴巴的枯樹葉。
「噢，我的天哪！」小刺蝟轉轉她的小眼睛，嘆了口氣。
But up in the sky, sailing towardsHedgehog, she saw a colorful bit of card.
Bother! She cried. This way and that sheran, as fast as she could. This way and that drifted the card...
禍不單行，就在她頭上，飛來了一小張鮮豔的卡片。
真煩人!她大喊。小刺蝟左躲右閃，拼命地跑。小卡片也左飄右蕩的跟著她……
... And landed right on her back, betweenthe apple and the three brown nuts.
」It's not fair! 「 Cried Hedgehog, who nowhad a juicy red apple, three brown nuts, a small green pear, a crumpled brownleaf and a colorful bit of card on her back.
「I』ll never get into my nest!」
……不偏不倚地正好落在她背上，扎在了大蘋果和棕色堅果中間。
「這真是邪門啦！」小刺蝟叫著，現在她的背上插著一個鮮紅多汁的大蘋果，三隻棕色的堅果，一隻小小的青梨，一片皺巴巴的枯樹葉還加上一小張鮮豔的卡片。
「我永遠也別想鑽進我的小窩了！」
Hedgehog pattered to the pond and gazed ather reflection in the water.
「Hello, Hedgehog. That’s a lot of stuff onyour back.」 Croaked Frog.
「I’m trying to get rid of it.」 SniffedHedgehog。
「Water will wash it off」 Said Frog.
小刺蝟吧嗒吧嗒的走到池塘邊，她盯著水中自己的倒影瞧。
「嘿，小刺蝟。你可背著不少好玩意兒啊！」青蛙呱呱地說。
「我正在想辦法把它們弄掉呢。」小刺蝟吸了吸鼻子。
「水能把他們衝掉。「青蛙建議道。
Hedgehog dipped afoot in the murky water then dived.
小刺蝟伸出一隻小腳丫踩進深色的水中。接著，潛了下去。
Splash! Herfriends watched Hedgehog hobbing up and down. The Juicy red apple, the threebrown nuts, the small green pear, the crumpled brown leaf and the colorful bitof card were all still there. So was a pink water lily.
譁……小刺蝟的朋友們看著她在水裡上上下下地撲騰著。那個鮮紅多汁的大蘋果，三隻棕色的堅果，那隻小小的香梨，那片皺巴巴的枯樹葉還有那張鮮豔的卡片依然好好地呆在小刺蝟的背上。而且，還多了一朵粉紅色的荷花。
「Glug~glug~glug」 gurgled Hedgehog as the others heaved her out of the water. She did look funny!
「咳~咳~咳」大家把小刺蝟拉出水面的時候，她還吐著水呢。她看起來真是滑稽極了！
But Hedgehog didnot find it funny.
「Stop laughing!」she spluttered and stamped her feet on the ground. 「Where am I going to sleep?」
Pig and Squirrellooked worried. So did Frog.
可是，小刺蝟一點兒也不覺得好笑。「別笑了！」噼裡啪啦地跺著腳丫。「這下我去哪兒睡覺啊？」小豬和小松鼠露出擔心的神色，小青蛙也一樣。
「I do haveone last idea,」 oinked Pig. 「Squeeze through that hedgeover there. That』ll brush everything off.」 So Hedgehog closed her eyes andsqueezed herself through the thick leaves. But did it get everything off herback?
「我倒是還有最後一個主意，」 小豬呼嚕嚕地說。「你使勁兒從那堆樹叢中穿過去，那些小樹能把所有的東西都刮掉。」於是，小刺蝟閉上眼睛，把自己塞進濃密的樹葉中去。不過，它真的能把所有的東西都刮掉嗎？
No, it did not. Itwas all still there. So were four ripe blackberries. And staring at her, with alook of great surprise, stood Goat!
不，它們不能。所有的東西都一動不動地呆在她的背上。而且，還多了四顆熟透了的黑莓。這時候，一隻山羊站在小刺蝟面前，吃驚地盯著她！
「Oooh!」 cried Goat.」You』ve brought LUNCH!」
「Help yourself.」Said Hedgehog.」Take it all.」
「咩——「山羊叫著。「你給我帶來了午餐啊！」
「別客氣，隨便吃。」小刺蝟說。「全部都吃光。」
「Yippee!」 brayed Goat. Then he picked off and ate the juicy red apple. Thethree brown nuts, the small green pear, the pink water lily and the four ripeblackberries. For pudding, he ate the card. The only thing he left was thecrumpled brown leaf. He just couldn’t eat any more.
「太好了！」山羊尖叫起來。接著，他把鮮紅多汁的大蘋果，和三隻棕色的堅果、小小的青梨、粉紅色的荷花，還有四顆熟透了的黑莓一個一個地摘下來吃掉。他連那張小卡片也作為餐後甜點吃掉了。唯一剩下的東西就是那片皺巴巴的枯樹葉。他已經吃飽了。多一點兒也吃不下了。
「Hoorah!」 cried Hedgehog. She felt as light as a feather. 「Thank you, Goat.」She said.
「好喲！」小刺蝟高興地大喊。她覺得現在的自己輕飄飄的仿佛一片羽毛。「謝謝你，山羊！」
她說。
Then she ran asfast as her little legs could carry her, through the gate, pass the pond,across the orchard, under the tree and home to her nest.
說完她就跑開了，用她最快的速度全力奔跑，通過了籬笆門，經過小池塘，穿過果園，大樹底下是她的家。她一路衝進自己的小窩。
Hedgehog squeezedinto her little nest. It fitted her perfectly. And it was the best nest ever.Outside a cold wind blew another apple off the tree.
小刺蝟蹭進她的小窩。小窩不大不小正合適。這是最好的窩啦！家門外面，寒冷的風又吹落了一個大蘋果。
But it didn’t fallon Hedgehog. She was safe in her nest and fast, fall asleep.
不過這一次，大蘋果沒有落到小刺蝟身上。她在小窩裡可安全了，一眨眼功夫，她就睡著了。
