索邦大學成立於13世紀，由當時法國國王聖路易（Saint Louis，即路易九世）身旁之神父羅伯德·索邦（Robert de Sorbon）所創。最初是於12世紀時，在巴黎塞納河上的西堤島（l'Ile de la Cité），針對當時來自法蘭西、皮卡第、諾曼第與英格蘭四個國家之年輕人教授神學、法律、醫學及藝術四種領域。爾後於1257年在聖傑內芙耶芙（Sainte Geneviève）山丘上成立索邦學院（Le collège de Sorbonne），因其在當時眾多學院中最具知名度，規模擴大之後便以索邦大學為名。
1968年法國學生運動發動之後，巴黎大學被拆分成13座獨立的大學，沿用「索邦」稱謂的大學為巴黎第一大學（先賢祠-索邦大學）、巴黎第三大學（新索邦大學）和巴黎第四大學（巴黎-索邦大學）。
接過老索邦大學衣缽的巴黎四大介紹中也說到學校可以追溯到13世紀。

後面還說了，未來，巴黎二大也是我們的。要不要這麼牛。貌似這個巨無霸除了沒有美術學院，其它學科都全了。要不再加把勁，把巴黎美術學院或者巴黎高裝也一起合了吧！
