中文說的「內容」英文譯作content 或contents，但不知單數與複數在用法上有何分別？
【解答】此字通常是用複數，意為：
（1）內面所有的東西、內容、囊中物，例如：
the contents of a room（房間裡面的東西），
the contents of a box（箱子裡的東西），
the contents of a bag（囊中物），
the contents of a bottle（瓶中物）等。
（2）書籍、報紙、雜誌、公文等的內容，或內容的目錄，例如：
the contents of a book（書的內容），
a table of contents（目錄），
A complete contents is to be found in Volume I.
（第一卷有全部目錄）等。
用單數時，意為：
（1）要旨（essential purport），真義（real meaning），例如：the content of a chapter（一章的要旨），the content of a statement（聲明要旨）等。
（2）與形式（form）對稱的內容（substance），例如：
the emotional content of a poem
（一首詩的感情豐富的內容）。
The content of his speech was good，but the form was not.
（他的演講詞內容很好，但結構不佳。）
The Chinese are inordinately fond of the drama，and the ideals and much of the content of plays are classical in character.
（中國人是極其愛好戲劇的，一些戲劇的理想及大半的內容都是合乎正統的。）
The contents of the works used by a 「talker of books」were written and studied by scholars.
（說書人所用的話本，內容都是由文人撰寫而加以研究過的。）
此字的單複數在用法上還有一種分別，即單數多用於抽象的內容，如：
the content of the course（課程的內容），
而複數則用於具體的內容，如：
A bag with its precious contents was missing.（一個內有重要物品的皮包不見了。）
但對同一物有時用單數來指「容量」，用複數來指「內容」也是可以的，如量米的鬥，它的content（容量）是一鬥，內面也許只有五升米，我們就說它現在的contents（內容）是五升。
又如張其春著的《翻譯之藝術》一書，它的content（內容）是談的翻譯，而它的contents（目錄）則是三章，每章七節。
說一本書或一份報的內容（即「思想內容」或「形式和內容」）也要用單數才對。
