I am told that 'smart', 'intelligent' and 'wise' mean different things.
Feifei: So are you smart, intelligent or wise? Or all three? 我相信這幾個特徵你肯定都
已經同時具備，就算不完全具備也沒關係，因為在學完它們之間的區別後你就會變得
smart, intelligent and wise!
為了幫助更好地解答今天的問題，咱們來當一回老闆。是的，你和我作為一個公司的領
導層，準備面試招聘一個新的經理。經過篩選後有三個求職者將被面試。我們先來認識
一下他們。首先第一位：
Example
Number one: Mr Salt. He's clearly very intelligent: he won a scholarship to study at
Harvard and has a PhD in astrophysics. He can speak seven languages and learned how
to fly a helicopter last year.
Feifei: Hmmm… he sounds very intelligent! Mr Salt 是天體物理學的博士，
astrophysics 天體物理學；曾獲得獎學金去 Harvard University 哈佛大學深造；會
講七國語言還會飛直升飛機 flies helicopters. 他聽起來也太聰明了吧！在這裡我們則
可以用單詞 intelligent 來表達一個人能非常輕鬆的學習和掌握很多複雜的事情。有請
下一位應聘者：

Number two: Mrs Spice. She is very smart. She has two degrees and a successful
business. She is good at thinking quickly in difficult situations in her business. She also
dresses very smartly. And she collects frogs.
Feifei: Hmmm… 挺有意思。But Mrs Spice was very… smart! 單詞 smart 可以用來表
達有智慧的、聰明的意思，尤其是在美式英語中人們會更多的使用 smart 的這層這個
含義。單詞 smart 還可以用來形容一個人的思維敏捷 she thinks quickly, 而且總能
做出正確的決定，那麼也就是說這個人通過實際工作證明了自己的智慧。對了，在英式
英語中，smart 還可以形容一個人穿著整潔、漂亮，衣冠楚楚。You're very smart
today! 下面是第三位應聘者，想必你已經猜到了，這個人很 wise:

Number three: Miss Curry. She's incredibly wise. She has worked in four different
companies over a 20-year career. She's got a lot of experience dealing with many kinds
of situations, and has seen great changes in the industry, which helps her make good
decisions. People often go to her for advice. She has climbed Everest twice, and has
three children.
Feifei: Now, Miss Curry 究竟她具備了哪些使她 wise 的條件呢？ 答案是她多年積累的經驗
使她能做出正確的、明智的決定和選擇，也正因如此，大家在遇到問題的時候會經常徵
求她的意見 advice 、向她取經。Wise 常用來形容年紀較長的前輩，不過我們每個人
都可以做一個 wise decision. 比如說，看外面天氣不太好然後決定帶上一把雨傘。不
過，這位 Miss Curry 好像身體也很強壯啊，她曾經兩次登上珠穆朗瑪峰 she
climbed Everest. 哎，說不定有一天我也能去爬呢！
