熟詞生義/afford

前綴af-同ad-, 去，往。詞根ford,向前，同forth. 指資助，推動前進。

1.走上前去（forth）付錢，即能夠買得起。

When Gerald Rudolph Ford succeeded (繼任) Nixon as President, he was quoted （引用）as saying "I am a Ford, not a Lincoln. My addresses（演講）will never be as eloquent（ ['eləkwənt] 雄辯的） as Mr. Lincoln's. But I will do my very best to equal his brevity（簡潔） and his plain speaking." Because ordinary folks（普通百姓） in America could afford to buy a Ford car instead of a Lincoln car,he compared himself to the man of people who was able to work for the people heart and soul.
