通常來講，在詞彙的教學方法中，都會提到「熟詞生義」。
什麼是「熟詞生義」？
在高考英語試卷中，有些詞我們明明很熟悉，但考察的卻不是我們熟悉的那個意思，如果沒有好好掌握詞的含義的話，很可能會丟分。如，work這個詞，最常見的意思是「工作」，但它還有「著作、作品」的意思。
因此學生在學習的時候，除了掌握單詞的常見釋義，還要了解單詞不常見的釋義，這樣才能穩操勝券。
下面就和小天一起看看下面這些你熟悉的詞，還有哪些你不知道的意思。
1. head
熟義：頭，頭部
生義：首腦；負責人
例：He is the head of that country.
他是那個國家的首腦。
2. brain
熟義：大腦
生義：聰明的人；有智慧的人
例：The company has some of the best brains in the world working for it.
這家公司匯集了世界上最優秀的人才為其效力。
3. feed
熟義：餵養
生義：滋養；給……提供
例：The exhibition will feed your mind.
這個展覽會滋養你的心靈。
4. pick up
熟義：撿起；拿起
生義：（碰巧或廉價地）買到
例：We managed to pick up a few bargains at the auction.
我們從拍賣場買到了幾件便宜貨。
5. advertise
熟義：做廣告
生義：宣揚；張揚
例：I didn't want to advertise the fact that he hadn't driven me to the airport.
我不想宣揚他沒有開車送我去機場的事。

熟義：平均數；平均的
生義：平常的；普通的
例：Freddy was an average student, but not an average person.
Freddy是一個普通的學生，但不是一個普通的人。

生義：安排好的

8.appetite
熟義：食慾；胃口
生義：愛好；喜好
例：Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite.

9. heavily
熟義：沉重地
生義：在很大程度上
例：He relies heavily on his parents.
他極度依賴父母。
10. rest
熟義：休息
生義：（被）支撐；（被）倚靠
例：His head was resting on her shoulder.
他的頭靠在她的肩上。
11. across
熟義：從一邊到另一邊；穿過；橫過
生義：（測量時）寬……
例：The snails are no larger than one centimeter across.
這些蝸牛體寬不超過1釐米。
12. dig into
熟義：向內挖掘
生義：探究；搜集；細查
例：You'll need to dig deep into the records to find the figures you want.
