英語小故事一：A PIGEON（鴿子）
A pigeon, oppressed by excessive thirst, saw a goblet of water painted on a signboard. Not supposing it to be only a picture, she flew towards it with a loud whir and unwittingly dashed against the signboard, jarring herself terribly. Having broken her wings by the blow, she fell to the ground, and was caught by one of the bystanders.
Moral：Zeal should not outrun discretion.
一隻鴿子口渴得很難受，看見畫板上畫著一隻水杯。她並不以為那只是一幅畫，而是發出一聲響亮的呼嚕聲，朝畫飛去，無意中撞在了招牌上，把自己撞得很不穩。她的翅膀被風吹斷了，摔在地上，被一個旁觀者抓住。
寓意：熱情不應超過謹慎。
英語小故事二：The Raven and the Swan（烏鴉和天鵝）
A raven saw a Swan and desired to secure for himself the same beautiful plumage. Supposing that the Swan's splendid white color arose from his washing in the water in which he swam, the Raven left the altars in the neighborhood where he picked up his living, and took up residence in the lakes and pools. But cleansing his feathers as often as he would, he could not change their color, while through want of food he perished.
Moral：Change of habit cannot alter Nature.
一隻烏鴉看到了一隻天鵝，想要得到同樣美麗的羽毛。假如天鵝的美麗的白色是由於它在水裡遊泳時洗過澡而產生的，那麼烏鴉就離開它生活的地方，到湖裡和水潭裡去住下來。但是，儘管他經常清洗自己的羽毛，卻無法改變它們的顏色，而由於缺乏食物，他就死了。寓意：人的本性不會隨著生活方式的改變而改變。
英語小故事三：The Bat and the Weasels（蝙蝠與黃鼠狼）
Abat who fell upon the ground and was caught by a Weasel pleaded to be spared his life. The Weasel refused, saying that he was by nature the enemy of all birds. The Bat assured him that he was not a bird, but a mouse, and thus was set free. Shortly afterwards the Bat again fell to the ground and was caught by another Weasel, whom he likewise entreated not to eat him. The Weasel said that he had a special hostility to mice. The Bat assured him that he was not a mouse, but a bat, and thus a second time escaped.
Moral：It is wise to turn circumstances to good account.
一隻蝙蝠墜落到地上，被黃鼠狼叼去，他請求饒命。黃鼠狼拒絕了，說他生來就是鳥類的天敵。蝙蝠向他保證他不是一隻鳥，而是一隻老鼠，於是就被放了出來。不一會兒，蝙蝠又掉到地上，被另一隻黃鼠狼捉住了，他請求討饒。黃鼠狼說他特別恨老鼠。蝙蝠向他保證自己不是老鼠，而是一隻蝙蝠，因此第二次逃走了。

英語小故事四：The Ass and the Grasshopper（驢子與蚱蜢）
An ass having heard some Grasshoppers chirping, was highly enchanted; and, desiring to possess the same charms of melody, demanded what sort of food they lived on to give them such beautiful voices. They replied, "The dew." The Ass resolved that he would live only upon dew, and in a short time died of hunger.
Moral：People should not expect anything out of proportion.
驢子聽見蚱蜢唱歌，被美妙動聽的歌聲所打動，自己也想能發出同樣悅耳動聽的聲音，便 羨慕地問他們吃些什麼，才能發出如此美妙的聲音來。蚱蜢答道：「吃露水。」驢子便也只吃露水，沒多久就餓死了。
寓意：這個故事告訴人們不要企望非份之物。
英語小故事五：The Dog and the Shadow（狗和影子）
It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now, on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook. As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also. So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.
Moral：Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.
一隻狗嘴裡銜著一塊肉，走過一條河上面的橋，看見他自己在水裡的影子，以為是另一隻狗，那時狗銜著的肉，比他自己的還要大一倍。因此他仍掉自己的那一塊，狠狠地撲向那隻狗，想奪到那一塊較大的肉。結果兩頭都落了空，因為他想要抓取在水中的那一塊，只不過是一個影子，而原來的那一塊，也被水衝走了。
寓意：謹記，切莫因追逐幻影而丟失已有的東西
英語小故事六：Apple（蘋果）
A man was going to the house of some rich person. As he went along the road, he saw a box of good apples at the side of the road. He said, "I do not want to eat those apples; for the rich man will give me much food; he will give me very nice food to eat." Then he took the apples and threw them away into the dust.
He went on and came to a river. The river had become very big; so he could not go over it. He waited for some time; then he said, "I cannot go to the rich man's house today, for I cannot get over the river."
He began to go home. He had eaten no food that day. He began to want food. He came to the apples, and he was glad to take them out of the dust and eat them.
Moral：Do not throw good things away; you may be glad to have them at some other time.
一個男人要去一個富人的房子。當他沿著路走時，他看見路邊有一箱好蘋果。他說:「我不想吃那些蘋果;因為那富足人必給我許多食物。他會給我很好的食物吃。」然後他拿起蘋果，把它們扔到塵土裡。

英語小故事七：A bird in a dunghill（糞堆裡的小鳥）
A little bird fly to south for the winter. It was very cold, almost frozen bird. Hence, fly to a large space, after a cow there, in a pile of cow dung upon the bird, frozen bird lying on the dunghill, feel very warm, gradually recovered, it is warm and comfortable lying, and soon began to sing songs, a passing wildcat hear voices, see, follow the voice, wildcats quickly found lying on the dunghill bird,pull it out and eat it.

英語小故事八：The lion in love（戀愛中的獅子）
A lion once fell in love with a beautiful girl, so he went to her parents and asked them to marry her to him.The old parents did not know what to say. They did not like the idea of giving their daughter to the lion, but they did not want to enrage the king of beasts. At last the father said, "We are glad to marry our daughter to you, but we fear that you might possibly hurt her. So if you remove your claws and teeth, we will give her to you."The lion loved the girl very much, so he trimmed his claws and took out his big teeth. When he came to the parents again, they simply laughed in his face, and beat him out of their house.
Moral：Some people easily believe what others say, abandon their own strengths, and are easily defeated by those who were afraid of them.
一隻獅子愛上了一位美麗的女孩兒，便找到她的父母向她求婚。女孩兒的父親不知道該如何回答，他不忍將女兒許配給野獸，但又害怕激怒這獸中之王。於是父親說：「我們很樂意將女兒嫁給你，但又怕你不小心傷害她，如果你拔去牙齒，剁掉利爪，我們就將女兒嫁給你。」獅子非常愛這個女孩兒，於是他修剪了爪子，拔掉了尖牙後又去找女孩的父母。可是這時，他們嘲笑他，並把他趕了出去。
寓意: 有些人輕易相信別人的話，拋棄自己的長處，結果輕而易舉地被原來害怕他們的人擊敗了。
英語小故事九：Hercules and Pallas（赫爾克裡斯與雅典娜）
When Hercules was walking in the forest, he saw a ball lying on the ground. He kicked it because it blocked his way.To his surprise, the ball did not roll away, but grew much bigger than before. So he kicked it again much harder.The harder he kicked, the bigger the ball grew. At last it completely filled up the road.Pallas then appeared. "Stop, Hercules," she said. "Stop kicking. The ball’s name is Strife.Let it alone and it will soon become small again."
Moral: life requires peaceful coexistence, and fights and confrontations often do more harm than good.

英語小故事十：The hare and the tortoise（龜兔賽跑）
The hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals. "I have never been beaten," he said, "when I run at full speed, no one is faster than me." The tortoise said quietly, "I will race with you." "That is a good joke," said the hare. "I could dance around you the whole way."The race started. The hare darted almost out of sight at once. He soon stopped and lay down to have a nap.The tortoise plodded on and on. When the hare awoke from his nap, he saw the tortoise was near the finish line, and that he had lost the race.
Moral: pride goes before a fall. Only by persevering can we achieve our goals.
