連結:old的比較級和最高級常為older和oldest;elder和eldest常用於表示家庭成員的年齡大小,常用作定語,不能用elder than。如:

refuse動詞,意為「拒絕;不願」。其用法如下:
(1) refuse+名詞/代詞。如:
He refused my plan. 他拒絕了我的建議。
I refused him. 我拒絕了他。
(2) refuse+間接賓語(sb.)+直接賓語(sth.)。如:
She can’t refuse him anything. 她不能拒絕他任何事情。
(3) refuse to do…意為「拒絕做……」。如:
He refused to go home. 他拒絕回家。
The man refused to answer the question. 這個人拒絕回答問題。

instead和instead of 都有「代替」的意思,但是他們在句中的位置以及用法卻並不相同。
instead adv. 位於句子的開頭,多用逗號和句子主體部分隔開。
位於句子的末尾,不用逗號隔開。
instead of 介詞短語;在句中位置較靈活,其後需接被代替的內容做賓語,賓語多由名詞、代詞、 動詞ing及介詞短語等充當。
7. Now he still misses his brother, but he doesn’t hate the driver any longer.
He no longer stays in his room by himself.
(1) not…any longer意為「不再」,相當於no longer,no longer用於實意動詞之前、助動詞或be動詞之後,或位於句尾或句首。與延續性動詞或表示狀態的詞連用,表示時間上的「不再」持續 如:
He didn’t live in Beijing any longer. 他不再住在北京了。
拓展:not…any more = no more ; no more 一般位於句尾或句首; 與瞬時動詞連用,表程度不再增加,次數不再重複
(2) by himself 自己一個人,靠自己,獨自一人
【語法】原因狀語從句
例句觀摩:
1. She is crying in the bathroom because she did badly in the English exam.
2. She feels very lonely because she has no friends to talk with.
如上面的句子,because把兩個句子連接起來的,because後面的那個句子在整個句子中充當狀語成分,這樣的句子叫作原因狀語從句。(註:假如後面跟的不是一個句子,而是一個名詞性短語則用because of
例句:
1. We can’t buy this kind of books because it’s not good for us.
2. He didn't go to work because of the heavy rain.
形容詞、副詞的同級比較
(1) 表示兩者在某方面程度相同時,用「as+形容詞/副詞原級+as+比較對象」句型。如:
I’m as tall as my father. 我和我父親一樣高。
He runs as fast as Jim. 他和吉姆跑得一樣快。
(2) 表示某人或某物在某方面不如另一個人或另一物時,用「not as/so+形容詞/副詞原級+as比較對象」句型。如:
Jane is not as/so brave as Maria. 簡沒有瑪麗亞勇敢。
連結:「not as+形容詞/副詞原級+as」句型與「…+比較級+than…」可以互相轉換。如:
This classroom is not as big as that one. 這個教室不如那個教室大。
=This classroom is smaller than that one.
=That classroom is bigger than this one.
(3)those用於代替前面提到的名詞(roads),以避免重複。為了避免重複,在從句中常用the one,the ones,that,those 等詞來代替前面出現過的名詞。其中the one代替可數名詞單數形式;the ones 或those 代替可數名詞複數形式;that代替不可數名詞。如:
The computers made in China is as good as those made in the USA.
中國產的計算機與美國產的計算機一樣好。
注意:如果代替單數名詞或不可數名詞,則用that。如:
The food in Sichuan is hotter than that in our hometown.
