今年暑期有一門課程本來只計劃在第一期和第四期開課的，結果應學生和家長的強烈要求，連續開了三期，且每期都爆滿而不得不增加班級，這就是 The Hobbit and Creative Writing 《霍比特人》和創意寫作課。結果老師和學生們還是沒上過癮，都要求在第四期開設 The Lord of The Rings and Creative Writing 《魔戒》和創意寫作課！
《魔戒》The Lord of The Rings 是英國作家、牛津大學教授、語言學家託爾金（ J.R.R. Tolkien） 創作的經典史詩奇幻文學作品，是 Tolkien 早年於1937年創作的兒童幻想小說《霍比特人》The Hobbit 的續篇，但隨著故事的發展逐漸變得恢宏龐大。Tolkein 也因此被譽為「現代奇幻文學之父」。那麼，Tolkien 的文字和故事究竟是有多大的魅力和魔力，讓人如此喜愛而不忍釋卷呢？
《泰晤士報》曾評論說：英語世界由兩部分人組成：閱讀過《魔戒》和《霍比特人》的人，和即將要去讀它們的人。The New Yorker 《紐約客》雜誌曾經有過一篇評論文章「Tolkien: Tedious Or Tremendous」或許能讓大家一窺端倪。
《紐約客》評論 Tolkien 的《魔戒》奠定了奇幻文學的基礎，創造了「出版業最成功的商業公式之一」。
「A vaguely medieval world populated by dwarfs, elves, trolls; an evil lord out to enslave the good creatures; and, almost always, a weird magic thing that will let him do it, if the hero doesn’t find or destroy it first — that is the Tolkien formula…Of all the unexpected things in contemporary literature, this is among the oddest: that kids have an inordinate appetite for very long, very tricky, very strange books about places that don’t exist.」

後世諸多的奇幻文學作品無一不受《魔戒》的影響和啟發。《紐約時報》書評專欄曾評論道「沒有託爾金，我們無法想像會有哈利波特的熱潮」。J.K. Rowling 自己就曾經說過「到《哈利波特》寫到最後一卷時，我仍堅持認為自己不會超越 Tolkien」。美國每年出版的大約兩億本平裝小說中，就有超過四分之一的作品可直接或間接地追溯到和託爾金的作品有關聯。大家可能不知道 J.R.R. Tolkein 和 C.S Lewis (《納尼亞傳奇》The Chronicles of Narnia 的作者）是密友，倆人在牛津大學當教授時相識。同為二十世紀最著名的奇幻小說大家，C.S. Lewis 眼中的 Tolkein 作品或許會給我們更大的啟發。

這樣的一部在文學史上地位顯著的作品，我們將興奮地帶領拓知的學員們來領略和學習！
在這門十節課的課程中，學生們將深入閱讀並探索 Tolkien 的《魔戒》三部曲的第一部《護戒同盟隊》The Fellowship of The Ring。學生們將通過模仿 Tolkien 的寫作結構，分析他在整部小說中語言的運用和小說主題，從而打磨提高他們的創意寫作技巧。學生們還將著眼於研究該小說與現代社會的關聯性，譬如魔戒與現代貪婪和權利觀念之間的各種聯繫。在整個學習過程當中會經常提到《霍比特人》，因此建議學生在參加本課程學習之前先閱讀《霍比特人》，
The Lord of The Rings and Creative Writing
Throughout this course, students will read and explore the first fantasy novel in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy - The Fellowship of the Ring. Students will hone their creative writing skills by imitating Tolkien's writing structure and analyze Tolkien's use of language and theme throughout the course of the novel. The class will also focus on the book's relevance to modern society, looking at the various connections The Ring has with modern notions of greed and power. It is recommended that students read The Hobbit before enrolling in this class, as it will be referenced throughout the course.

Mr. Waterman is a licensed ELA (English Language Arts) teacher in a high school in Connecticut. He has intensive experience in teaching English literature in middle and high school, and is especially skilled at designing personalized courses to help students improve their critical reading and writing skills. Mr. Waterman is passionate about teaching, hoping to cultivate in his students a love for literature, a curiosity about human nature, and a profound understanding of the world. In addition to a master's degree in English Literature, Mr. Waterman also holds a master's degree in Educational Technology and is proficient in the design and application of online-based teaching.
4-6 人 Zoom 在線小班授課。老師詳細批改寫作作業，並在課程結束後提供綜合的反饋意見。
