CLOTH KNOW Reusable Menstrual Pads

「I'm not crying because I'm on my period. I just can't believe a film about menstruation just won an Oscar.」
Rayka Zehtabchi, the 25-year-old director of the 91st Academy Award-winning documentary "Period. End of Sentence.", burst into tears when she took the stage to receive the award.
2018 ‧ Short film/Documentary《Period. End of Sentence.》
The 26-minute film tells the story of a group of women in a rural village outside Delhi, India. They fight the deeply rooted stigma surrounding menstruation by manufacturing sanitary pads to enable adolescent girls to stay in school while managing their periods. It's about a quiet but forceful revolution that eventually empowered the women in the community.
Some might think it was bit of an overreaction from Zehtabchi. However, they may change their mind once they hear this anonymous comment from someone behind the Oscar ballot.
「It's well done, but it's about women getting their period, and I don't think any man is voting for this film because it's just icky for men.」
Menstruation is a periodic exfoliation of the endometrium in women's bodies. It is a normal physiological phenomenon which represents a woman's physical maturity.
In Chinese society, menstruation is often called "Yi-Ma (aunt)", "Qin-Qi (relative)" and "Na-Ge (that)".
There are just so many nicknames for women's period that make menstruation sound like Lord Voldemort, the "You-Know-Who" and "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" in Harry Potter.
Nevertheless, we are much luckier than the Indian women in the film. After centuries of shame and stigma around the world, taboo around menstruation finally seems to be lifting.
Nowadays, you can easily find bunches of women's menstrual products from numerous brands on the shelf in stores. They are either menstrual pads or tampons. The former accounts for the majority; both are disposable.
What's wrong with that?
From users' perspective, when choosing menstrual products, safety and comfort should come first.
To preserve better, the absorbent cotton body of disposable menstrual pads are added with various types of chemicals, such as absorbent material made of plastic, preservatives, bleaching agents, etc.
Having your skin in direct contact with these chemicals for a long time can cause discomfort, irritation or even allergies and inflammation. In fact, the physiological odor during menstruation is mostly due to chemical reactions from a mix of chemicals on disposable menstrual with blood.
From an environmental perspective, single-use plastics are disastrous. And disposable menstrual pads can be made up of about 90% plastics - the equivalent of 4 supermarket bags! Let alone the individual plastic packaging for each pad and tampon we use.
A woman would need about 15,000 disposable menstrual pads in her lifetime. Each piece of discarded pad would need about 200 years to decompose.
Well, disposable menstrual pads or tampons are not your only choice nor the better choice. Reusable menstrual cups and washable pads are much more sustainable alternatives; they are better for your health, cheaper in the long run, and cause way less harm to the environment.
Made of flexible medical grade silicone, menstrual cups are the most durable option that can be reused for up to 10 years! Imagine how much plastic waste that is a little cup can save!
Made of natural fabrics, reusable menstrual pads are also a great alternative. For women prefer less invasive options, reusable pads can offer protection over and over again for around 2 years. Instead of using 15,000 conventional pads that are going to end up in landfills for centuries, you can choose to use 150 reusable pads and can be easily composted once their life comes to an end.
Today, we're going to introduce a Chinese brand, CLOTH KNOW, and their comfortable natural reusable menstrual cloth pads.
Co-founded by two friends, Keman and Maizi, who believed menstrual products didn't have to be uncomfortable and bad for the environment, CLOTH KNOW was created step by step, from choosing the ideal organic cotton fabrics and the right materials, product design and innovation, to market testing, with encouraging people to make the switch being the most challenging yet most rewarding part of the journey.
Let's take a look at this two-minute video about Cloth Know.
After several modifications, the current version of Cloth Know's pads are made of GOTS-certified 100% organic cotton (waterproof layer: 100% recycled cotton fiber and rubber), free of fluorescence and formaldehyde.
Organic cotton isn't only more environmentally friendly, but safer and healthier for human body, as there are no pesticides and other chemical agents involved in the planting process.
The texture of the washable pads is similar to that of pure cotton underwear, providing far higher comfort than disposable pads.
Below video demonstrates how to wash Cloth Know's reusable pads (and how easy it is!) ps. If seeing blood would make you sick, don't click.
If you are accustomed to disposable menstrual products, you may have some doubts and there might be some psychological barriers for you to cross. Don't force yourself to make an overnight switch. You can start from using disposable pads in the daytime, and use washable ones during the evening and the night.
Habits die hard, small steps can make the change more likely to stick, eventually bringing a positive transformation for the environment, and for yourself.
