As soon as the warmth of the first dumpling filled mymouth, I thought I tasted home. At home, dumplings symbolize family gatheringswhere Grandma made the delicious fillings, Grandpa kneaded the dough whilehumming some tunes from a classic Beijing Opera piece, Dad cut the dough intosmall cubes, I rolled the cubes into dough wrappings, and Mom sealed in thefillings and added the dumplings into the boiling water. Indeed, with my「foodie」 habit of constant exploration, different dishes always recalldifferent memories for me. For example, Three Cups Chicken, a traditionalChinese dish, brings me back to childhood when I was awed by its special andluscious taste every time my grandparents made it. French crêpes and bananafondue trigger memories of Cooking Club at Middlesex with the image of abeautiful and relaxing Sunday afternoon during the winter, with friends arounda table at my advisor’s house. Nevertheless, no matter how much I enjoy allkinds of good food, Grandma’s dumplings have always remained at the top of mylist. Grandma has a recipe for the best dumplings in the world, a recipe I wasnever able to master even though I had tried many times by myself. I was almostpositive that she left out a secret ingredient when she wrote down the recipefor me.
When I first came to the U.S. for high school, everything was unfamiliar. As an adventurous fifteen-year-old, despite greatcuriosity and willingness to leave my home to explore, I was overwhelmed by thedaunting differences between the world I had lived in and this fascinating, albeit bewildering, environment. I still remember the shock I went through atthe first dance at Middlesex. I tried so hard to understand why it was nothinglike the waltz lessons I had taken in Beijing the summer before freshman yearas preparation for the high school dances I created in my mind according to oldAmerican movies and TV shows. I can also recall the surprise in my friends』eyes when I asked them what Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were. The way everyoneparticipated in class was also completely different from my regimented classesin Beijing. During my first few months as a freshman, I secretly longed forsome element from home to appear in this alien life in which I sometimes feltlike I was marooned.
During my first Spring Festival — the traditionalChinese New Year — away from home, Mrs. Ku, the Chinese teacher at Middlesex, organized a dumpling-making event that was open to the entire school. I couldnot help thinking of my Grandma and her recipe for the best dumplings in theworld. Homesickness, sadness, and nostalgia filled me. But I put on a smile andtaught my excited friends and teachers how to make dumplings. As the dumplingsthat my friends made started to look more like dumplings than meatballs, mysharp sense of melancholy of being away from home melted away in the vapors ofthe boiling water and the laughter of my friends. I looked around the DiningHall and saw the lovely people with whom I made those dumplings; they were allsmiling and enjoying learning together. Despite the initial disbelief, Igradually began to see my family within the crowd! They were the people who madethe fillings, kneaded the dough, etc. As soon as I took the first bite from thewarm dumpling, an epiphany came to me. The reason I love dumplings so much doesnot really have to do with their tantalizing aroma, their succulence, or mylove for food; instead, the process of making them with the people whom I loveand cherish is what makes dumplings so special. The people are indeed thesecret ingredient of Grandma’s recipe.
你的transcript(在校成績單)和StandardizedTesting(標化考試,SAT、AP等)已經非常強了,足以證明你在學術上的優勢。
於是,我通過排除法,把我在其他申請材料中已經體現過一次或多次的特質排除掉,剩下了幾個對我很重要、我想通過這篇文書體現的我的特點:curiosity(好奇心與求知慾)、adaptability(快速適應周圍環境的能力)、positivity(樂觀開朗的心態)、I’m a team player/part of a community(我是個喜歡集體生活、能與別人合作的人)等等。
University of Chicago
EssayOption 1:
「The aim of argument, or of discussion, should not bevictory, but progress.」 – Joseph Joubert
Sometimes, people talk a lot about popular subjects toassure 『victory』 in conversation or understanding, and leave behind topics ofless popularity, but great personal or intellectual importance. What do youthink is important but under-discussed?
-Anonymous Suggestion
EssayOption 2:

Describe your new intendedmajor. Why are you interested in it and what courses or areas of focus withinit might you want to explore? Potential options include Commuter Science,Bromance Languages and Literatures, Pundamentals: Issues and Texts, AntHistory…
-Inspired by Josh Kaufman, Class of 2018
EssayOption 3:
Earth. Fire. Wind. Water. Heart! Captain Planet supposesthat the world is made up of these five elements. We’re familiar with the previously-notedset and with actual elements like hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon, but select andexplain another small group of things (say, under five) that you believecompose our world.
-Inspired by Dani Plung, Class of 2017
EssayOption 4:

EssayOption 5:

-Inspired by Alex Serbanescu, Class of 2021
EssayOption 6:
In the spirit of adventurous inquiry, pose your ownquestion or choose one of our past prompts. Be original, creative, thoughtprovoking. Draw on your best qualities as a writer, thinker, visionary, socialcritic, sage, citizen of the world, or future citizen of the University ofChicago; take a little risk, and have fun.
2016-2017 Prompt: The ball isin your court—a penny for your thoughts, but say it, don’t spray it. So long as you don’t bite off more than youcan chew, beat around the bush, or cut corners, writing this essay should be apiece of cake. Create your own idiom, and tell us its origin—you know, thewhole nine yards. PS: A picture is worth a thousand words. -Inspired by AprilBell, Class of 2017, and Maya Shaked, Class of 2018 (It takes two to tango.)
With a big smile, I told my suite-mate Sophia, 「LetRainbow brighten your day!」 when she was frustrated after she saw the result ofthe election of Girls』 Varsity Tennis captain.
She looked at me with confusion: 「You mean the sun?」
「Nope, you heard it right, it’s Rainbow.」 I replied, happy to see that now she was distracted from the captain-election result.
「Oh, is this something like 『There’s always a rainbowafter the rain』?」 she asked.
「Well, that’s half of it,」 I replied, laughing at whatI’m about to tell her. 「You know how I told you I had two other English namesbefore 『Renee』?」
She nodded, trying to figure out a possible correlationbetween what I said and an English name.
「Well, the one right before 『Renee』 was 『Rosa』…」 I tooka deep breath and continued, 「And the first English name I gave myself was『Rainbow』!」
As expected, I saw her eyes widen, and within the nextsecond, she started laughing and said, 「Oh my gosh, that is so cute!」
「Hey, to be fair, I was in kindergarten, and 『Rainbow』was the most advanced English word I knew at that time, so I wanted to use itas my name.」 Pretending to protest her 「cruel derision,」 I felt a sense ofrelief and happiness, noticing that Sophia was now completely distracted fromnews about the captainship.
So, what exactly is the second half of the meaning ofthis self-made idiom? Part of it is the fact that when I tell people the storyabout my first English name to help them understand this phrase, the storyitself brightens their day because it is hilarious and unexpected. Who wouldchoose 「Rainbow」 as a name? I would, ofcourse -- and everyone who knows me understands. However, more importantly, the idiom is atestament to my deep commitment to choosing happiness and optimism and tobringing those gifts to the people around me.
The Middlesex community accepted me with warmth andencouragement when I first came to the U.S. and felt overwhelmed by a newculture. In return for the kind support, I strive to leave a trail of joy andlaughter every day whether it’s by enthusiastically participating in classdiscussions, popping into faculty members』 offices with a big smile to say 「hi」and chat, or supporting freshmen in the dorm to adjust to high school.Personally, my endless positive energy and enthusiasm came from the fact that Iview difficulties as challenges that I will conquer instead of hardshipsblocking me. Our Dean of Academics refers to me as 「the always smiley Ms.Anvil」 because I unconditionally share the joy I gained from my work asEditor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, the Anvil, with the Middlesexcommunity through my interviews, articles, and communications. Math club is ahighlight of every week. As a co-head, I encourage others to find as much funas I do in the process of collaboratively solving problems. I still rememberthe time when we drew blue and red balls all over the whiteboard to makesolving probability problems fun for our new members. Moreover, I try tocelebrate others』 achievements as if they were my own, and I think this attitudehas influenced my friends to be happy for each other’s successes. Therefore, Iam completely honest when I said, 「Let Rainbow brighten your day!」 because thatis what I try to do with my daily actions.
As it turns out, 「Let Rainbow brighten your day!」 doesn’tjust make other people feel happier; it also makes me feel freer. Born andraised in Beijing, I had drastically different experiences before and after Icame to Middlesex. Even though my academic transition was very smooth, thedaily communication part was not as quick to come along. A lot of times duringthe first two years, I would think of a normal saying in Chinese and realizethat I didn’t know how to exactly translate it into English, and then noticethat the conversation had already moved on when I was struggling to find aliteral translation. I realized afterwards that the moment I made up 「letRainbow brighten your day,」 I finally felt comfortable enough about my newenvironment and about myself to freely shout out what I wanted to express the momentI thought of it. After I mentioned this new idiom to my friends and told themthe background story about my first English name, Rainbow, they all found thisphrase super-fitting for the situation, and they loved the story so much thatthey started saying it to each other as general encouragement—「Don’t worry, letRainbow brighten your day!」
Everywhere I go, I aspire to bring the same positivitythat made a freshman proctee in my dorm say, 「I want to be a little Renee andbe happy all the time!」 and let Rainbow brighten everyone’s day!

What aspect of the Columbiacommunity, outside of the classroom, would you most want to impact and why? (150 words or less)
A positive attitude is a crucial ingredient for acohesive, successful community. Thus, I would most want to bring joy andlaughter to the community every day. I celebrate my friends' achievements as ifthey were my own and see challenges as special offers of infinite possibilitiesinstead of hardships to be endured. These understandings motivate me to bringpositive energy to everything I do, whether it’s compiling the schoolnewspaper, the Anvil, or rallying the troops in math club, or supportingfreshmen in the dorm to adjust to high school life. A positive attitude is aspowerful as anything that makes groups successful. My friends and teachers havetold me that I bring optimism and cheerfulness into their lives and alwaysbring out the best in them. I wish to add my positive energy and passion to theinclusive and exciting atmosphere outside of the classroom at Columbia.

From Medieval Literature to Linear Algebra, from writingfor the school newspaper to enjoying problem-solving in Math Club, I have nevertried to define myself in just one way. Thus, it is reassuring to know thateven though I want to major in an engineering field, at Columbia, I can stillfollow my other interests and read and discuss Plato’s Republic and learn aboutart at the Met (one of my favorite places in the world ever since I went therefor the first time in fifth grade) through the College Core that’s open toengineering students. The availability of a liberal arts minor for an engineernot only satisfies my interdisciplinary interests but also feeds my curiosityand creativity, which are both important to solving real-world problems.
There are also wonderful research positions to work withprize-winning faculty reserved just for undergraduate engineers. ***********(This part is abbreviated in this book because it contains some personalprivacy). The Columbia Maker Space is perfect for such an aspiration since itprovides all students with equipment and training to design and fabricate theirown prototypes. Research and entrepreneurial opportunities such as STEP andFast Pitch Competitions can help me launch my project after I finish theprototype.
More importantly, Columbia is a place that focuses notonly on producing fantastic scholars, but also on cultivating good people whoare global citizens and global leaders. The Core curriculum ensures thatColumbia’s students not only are literarily mature, but also possess globalperspectives. Also, there are numerous volunteering opportunities, such asCommunity Impact for undergraduates to remember to give back to the worldaround them. Ultimately, it is this connection to helping others around theworld that draws me to engineering.

The final project for the Electrical Engineering courseof MIT’s Women’s Technology Program was to write codes for and create afunctional octave of the piano with aluminum foil 「keys」 on a cardboardconnected to a microcontroller-platform called the Arduino. However, uponcompletion of the single-octave piano, I found my performance restricted to"Doe-A-Deer" because of the limitation of the one octave. The keyproblem to creating more octaves was the Arduino’s limited number ofoutput-pins, which made it impossible to control more than 12 notes directly.
I turned to Google for some inspiration. As I was typingin my password, the Shift key caught my eye. A connection to the problem struckme: knowing that the Shift key redefines lowercase letters into uppercase, perhapssimilarly, I could redefine the note of each key on my piano by pressing acertain function button. Then, each physical foil key on the cardboard would beable to play at different octaves, surpassing the conundrum posed by thelimited number of output-pins. Once the idea took hold, I designed a computerprogram to incorporate two buttons in the circuit that would shift the notes ofall thirteen foil keys one octave up or down each time I pressed thecorresponding button.
Thinking beyondthe most obvious, physical solutions, to solve problems with virtual creationis wonderful and exciting. I will keep looking for the hidden solutions tobigger problems so that one day, perhaps, my innovations will change everyone’slife for the better.
Virtually all of Stanford's undergraduates live oncampus. Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about youor that will help your roommate -- and us -- know you better. (100 to 250words)
Dear roomie,
I am so thrilled that we will be living together nextyear! I am an only child, so I love the experience of living with my 「sisters.」Thus, I spent three of my four years at Middlesex living in doubles and a quadwith my friends. You can always count on me to be fun and supportive! Minidance parties during study breaks, tooth brushing sessions after a long day,snow-flake making with hot chocolate, self-teaching lessons on how to say 「hi,my name is…」 in eleven languages just out of curiosity – my best memories ofhigh school are with my roommates. We had nightly chats in the common room, sitting (or lying) in a circle, about our childhoods. Now, my roommates are allhalf-experts in Chinese culture, even though they came from Massachusetts, NewHampshire, and Texas. My roommates have also discovered that no matter how myday was, I am always ready to listen to people around me. I am happy for theirachievements and sad for their disappointments, and in times of frustration, Ican always find ways to help them feel better. Maybe by telling them the storythat I picked my first English name to be 「Rainbow」 in elementary school, orthat I took waltz lessons before coming to the US thinking that’s what highschool dances are like ☺
I am confident that we will have a great adventuretogether!
Love,
Renee
