Coastal trail running on the Abel Tasman Track

All about trail running and comfort!

Running coach and running ambassador Adrien from Shanghai Run Force had the chance to run for 3 months across New Zealand in 2018 while discovering the most beautiful trails. During that time he ran more than 1600 km, from the most northern part of the island to the most southern part! 

For the 2020 Chinese New Year vacation, he wants to take you on his next adventure! Join him on his ultimate 9 days running tour on the  South Island across extremely diverse landscapes. You will see more during this vacation than many will see in a lifetime!

ITINERARY

Day 1

Flying from China to Nelson, New Zealand via Auckland.

We will leave Friday evening from China and land in the afternoon in the beautiful coastal town of Nelson where we will be greeted by the warm New Zealand summer. We will pick up our vehicle and check into our hotel. For those who are up to it, we will go for a nice and easy evening run near the beach.

Day 2

Abel Tasman Trail Run: 36km of pure coastal running

We will wake up early and run along the beautiful coast with it's turquoise water. We will observe many birds and run on beaches and across lagoons! Resting in the huts and enjoying beautiful sceneries while eating local snacks. The trail is in amazing conditions as it is one of the New Zealand's famous 「Great Walks」. Although we don't gain any altitude, expect to put in a lot of elevation gain with it's intense ups and downs. At the end of the day, we take a water taxi back to our vehicle!

Day 3

Inland Pack Trail: Run in a stream under some gorgeous white cliffs for 25 km!

We will leave Nelson after breakfast and then have lunch in Punaikaiki on the West Coast of the island. In the afternoon we will run one of the most underrated trails in New Zealand, the Inland Pack trail where we will be running for 25 km along or in the famous Fox river. Expect to see incredible white cliffs with overhanging jungle and beautiful mountain views form afar. Definitely a highlight of the trip. In the evening, we will go see the famous pancake rocks after dinner.

Day 4

Mingha - Deception Trail: It starts to get mountainous! 25km

Run in river valley of the Southern Alps and cross a famous pass. Pure NZ wilderness!

After a good sleep in Punaikaiki, we finally head to the mountains! A beautiful road trip along the West Coast before we get right into the Southern Alps. In the early afternoon, we will leave the car and do 25km across the mountains by following the Deception river while crossing it multiple times. The hightlight of the trail will be going through the pass and getting incredible views of both valleys. We will finish back at the road where our vehicle will be waiting for us.

Day 5

Mount Cook Mueller Hut: 12 km Hike Run. The best views of Mt Cook

We head towards the Mount Cook village where we start a very steep hike up the mountain towards the Mueller hut. After a 2 hour climb we get to the best views of some of the most incredible mountains in New Zealand. You will have prime view of Mount Cook, the highest peak of New Zealand at 3764m high!! After a good day of hiking we head to the famous village of Queenstown to spend the night in one of the most exciting places of New Zealand.

Day 6

The Famous Routeburn Track! 35 km of mountain running! The most famous Great Walk in New Zealand

We wake up early in Queenstown and take a shuttle to the Routeburn trailhead. This is a pure traverse where you run from one valley to the other. You will get a pure long distance running experience while going through some stunning routes. Definitely a highlight of the trip! At the end of the trail, a shuttle will take us back to Queenstown for a good night sleep.

Day 7

The Milford Sound! A must see in New Zealand!

Today is a rest day as tomorrow is the biggest day! To have an easy and enjoyable day, we head to the world famous Milford Sound where we will take a boat and explore the amazing location. If you are lucky, you will spot dolphins and lots of marine life. Seeing the mountains rise from the ocean is simply astonishing and it is nature in it’s purest form! After the day tour we head back to Te Anau, a town with it’s beautiful lake and we spend a relaxed evening before our final big trail!

Day 8

The Kepler Track, 60km of pure trail running!

Your last day trail running and it’s going to be a big day! The Kepler Track is located right outside Te Anau where you start running along the lake in the forest before heading up the mountain. Very quickly you get into the alpine with incredible views. If the weather allows, we will summit the high point of Mt Luxmore before heading on to  incredible ridges! As we run along the skyline ridges, the famous local mountain parrot called Kea, will be flying along our sides. We will then head down back to the valley where we will run along the river until we get back to town. It will be a long day with full of incredible memories.

Day 9

Good bye New Zealand! Fly back to China

You say goodbye to your guide Adrien and to the beautiful landscape of New Zealand. You fly out of Queenstown and head back to China. However, in a few weeks, Adrien will be sending you tons of pictures of you running the mountains and you will have memories fror a life time.

This running tour will have a very limited amount of participants, focused on a high quality and exclusive experience. 

This tour requires the following experience to participate:

Prior long distance trail running experience (50km+) or sub 4 hours marathon runner.Ability to travel to New Zealand (passport and visa)Must signup for travel insurance and emergency services insuranceAs a trail runner and part of a trail running team, always be positive, supportive and bring great energy to the group.
