春節已過，牛年來到。
你知道「牛年」用英文怎麼說嗎？
在揭曉答案之前，我們先來看一看英文中哪些詞可以表示「牛」~
cow表示「母牛」，bull表示「公牛」，而calf表示「牛犢」。
根據朗文詞典的釋義，cattle指「cows and bulls kept on a farm for their meat or milk」，也就是菜牛（beef cattle）或者奶牛（dairy cattle）。
其複數形式為oxen。泛指野生或馴養的牛類，是通稱。
所以「牛年」裡的「牛」，我們會用ox。那「牛年」就是ox year嗎？不對，英文中表達中國的「生肖年」時會用the Year of the + 某個生肖。所以，「牛年」的正確表達是the Year of the Ox。
2021年是牛年，我們就可以說：2021 is the Year of the Ox according to Chinese zodiac.
上面說到的Chinese zodiac，或者zodiac sign, animal sign, birth sign都表示「生肖」。
別人問，「你屬什麼？」（What’s your zodiac/animal/birth sign?），可以回答：
我屬牛。
My zodiac/animal/birth sign is ox.
I was born under the Year of the Ox.
2021年是我的本命年。
2021 is the year of my birth sign.
最初是商業用語，表示現金牛產品或者厚利產品，指持續獲得利潤，為其他業務提供資金的業務或產品，也就是今天所說的「搖錢樹」。比如：
This product has always been a cash cow for our company.
這種產品一直是我們公司的搖錢樹。

牛在印度是神聖的，即使影響交通，也不能碰它；即使遭遇饑荒，也禁止吃它。於是，曾經統治過印度的英國人就用sacred cow表示不容置疑、批評不得的人、習俗、制度等。比如：
This has become her sacred cow - nothing can change her schedule rain or shine.
這已經成為她雷打不動的活動了，什麼事都不能改變她的日程。
想像一下一頭怒氣衝衝的公牛闖進了滿是瓷器的店裡，會造成怎樣的後果？a bull in a china shop現用來表示「笨拙莽撞的人，冒失鬼」。比如：
We were just about to come to an agreement when Mike came in like a bull in a china shop. His rough remarks turned everything upside down.
我們正快要談妥時，邁克冒冒失失跑進來，說話粗野，把一切都給攪壞了。
在西班牙的鬥牛活動中，鬥牛士常揮動紅布激怒公牛。現用a red rag to a bull比喻容易使人憤怒、惹人生氣的事。比如：
Don't mention anything about that to your father. It's like a red rag to a bull.
不要在你爸面前提起那件事。他聽了肯定會生氣的。
take the bull by the horns
這個習語的字面意思是抓住牛角制服公牛，也和鬥牛相關。用紅布激怒公牛之後，鬥牛士迎牛而上，雙手果斷利落地抓住牛角，然後竭盡全力扭轉牛頭，使公牛失去平衡而摔倒。這樣做需要臨危不懼、迎難而上的勇敢與冒險精神，因此take the bull by the horns這一動作現用來表示「勇敢面對困境（或險境）」。比如：
To sail on the sea on a stormy night like this was a great risk but the crew was determined to take the bull by the horns.
在這樣的大風大雨的夜晚出海航行是很冒險的，但船員們決心頂著風浪上。
