Cook with the Sun: Solar Cookers Get Hot
Millions of people around the world cook their food over a smoky fire every day. It is often difficult to find wood for the fire. People who do not have wood must spend large amounts of money on cooking fuel. However, there is a much easier way to cook food using energy from the sun. Solar cookers, or ovens, have been used for centuries.
Solar ovens consist of a system of reflectors and a cooking pot. The rest is up to your imagination! Once you have collected or bought your solar oven, you can use it to prepare hot meals in the backyard, at a campground or wherever your heart desires.
Of all the inventions that could benefit humankind, a reliable solar cooker remains one of the most necessary. Countless people across the developing world still cook their food by burning wood or even cow-dung, causing breathing problems and severe pollution in some regions.
The searching for a practical solar cooker has gone on for decades and produced dozens of models. But none of them have caught on importantly for use in the developing world because they can't store heat. Without the ability to store heat, a cooker cannot be used, for example, on cloudy days.
But now a group based at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is reporting a discovery in solar cookers. They say it will lead to the production of practical solar cooker within a year and a half and it can store enough heat during a sunny day to work for an entire additional day, even if it is cloudy.
Tips:
1.It is often difficult to find wood for the fire.
• It is + adj. + to do sth. It is happy to hear that news. It is hard to achieve that goal.
2.People who do not have wood must spend large amounts of money on cooking fuel.
Large amounts of money were spent on the bridge.
He spends three days on the report.
3.Solar ovens consist of a system of refl ectors and a cooking pot.
• consist of 由…… 構成。 This team will consist of 6 members.
4.The rest is up to your imagination!
• be up to 由某人決定,取決於某人。
We will make a plan for you, but the rest is up to yourself.
4.Of all the inventions that could benefit humankind, a reliable solar cooker remains one of the most necessary.
You could benefit from classes.
5.The searching for a practical solar cooker has gone on for decades and produced dozens of models.
• go on for (時間、數字或年齡等)接近。 The population of the city is going on for 500,000.
• Good Lord ! It's going on for ten o'clock and I promised to see Mr. Wang at half past nine .
I've been there dozens of times.
6.But none of them have caught on importantly for use in the developing world because they can't store heat.
It's not surprising that his ideas didn't catch on.

Solar Cooking Attracts Kids in Taiwan
Solar cooking is a convenient cooking method. Today, the useful solar cooker really works and it is attracting more and more people's attention.
Taiwanese people have realized the risk associated with their energy sources; about 97% of the energy sources are imported. This has caused a solar cooking education movement in Taiwan.
A local environmental group in Taipei held a solar cooker design competition in some elementary schools last year.
About 500 students(ages 8-12 years) were taught solar cooking principles before the competition, After learning basic solar cooking skills, the students were divided into small teams and asked to design and build their own solar cookers in 4 weeks. They were encouraged to be creative and use recycled materials such as driftwood, old fish tanks, CDs, umbrellas, woks, and mirrors.
The challenge of the competition was to solar cook a small amount of dried mung beans. While waiting for the beans to cook, each group wasasked to describe their design, building process, experimentation and cooperation within the group.
It was amazing to see the students' excitement when they discovered that simple materials could be used to cook food under the sun and solar cooking has really attracts those creative kids.
Tips:
1.Today, the useful solar cooker really works and it is attracting more and more people's attention.
The little girl's excellent performance attracts the audience's attention.
• more and more 越來越多的。例如:More and more people are giving up smoking.
2.After learning basic solar cooking skills, the students were divided into small teams and asked to design and build their own solar cookers in 4 weeks.
• be divided into 被分成……,為被動語態。 Under the plan, the nation would be divided into twelve areas.
• be asked to do sth. I am asked to sing a song at the party.
Culture Note
Solar Energy(太陽能)Solar energy is an energy source that involves harnessing(利用)the radiant(輻射的)light energy emitted by the sun and converting it into electrical current. Since the middle of the 20 th century, the ability to harness and utilize(利用)solar energy has greatly increased, making it possible for homes and businesses to make use of the renewal energy source rather than rely on more conventional means of generating power. Research into the applications of solar energy continue, along with the development of more cost-effective(合算的)ways to capture and store the energy for future use.
At present, the most common means of harnessing solar power is the utilization(利用)of a system involving a series of solar panels(太陽能板)and storage batteries (蓄電池). The panels collect the radiant light and store the captured energy in the batteries. While energy is stored, it can also be used real time to operate various types of machinery and home appliances. The excess is stored for use at night or in other situations where radiant light is not readily available for some reason.

Grammar:
•原級(同級)比較:as…as…, not as (so)…as…(不)一樣……的。例如:
We'll give you as much help as we can.
She isn't as (so) active in sports as before.
He made fewer mistakes than I did.
He is even richer than I.
It's more economical than the traditional cooker.
It was the most / least interesting story I have ever read.
He is the tallest of the three.
She is the most beautiful lady in the world.
They didn't offer Ann the job.
Ann wasn't offered the job.
Once a promise is made, it shouldn't be broken.
The whole village has been washed away by the flood.
He didn't show up at the party. I was not surprised at all.
Are the street lights usually turned on at seven in the evening?
