本單元須掌握的語法知識點是「情態動詞can」。
情態動詞是動詞的一種，表示說話人的語氣和情態等，有一定的意義，不能單獨做謂語，必須和實義動詞或連繫動詞連用構成謂語。常用的情態動詞有can，may，must等。
1. 情態動詞can的基本用法
（1） 情態動詞can用在陳述句中多表示主語做某事的能力，意為「能，會」；有時也可表示「可能」。如：
He can answer this question. 他能回答這個問題。
We can speak English. 我們會說英語。
My brother can be in the bedroom now. 我弟弟現在可能在臥室裡。
（2） 含有情態動詞can的肯定句變否定句時，需在can後加not，其縮寫形式為can『t。如：
I can sing this song. 我會唱這首歌。（肯定句）
I can『t sing this song. 我不會唱這首歌。（否定句）
（3） 將情態動詞can直接放在句首，構成一般疑問句。如：
Bob can play the violin. 鮑勃會拉小提琴。
—Can Bob play the violin? 鮑勃會拉小提琴嗎？
—Yes, he can. / No, he can’t. 是的，他會。/不，他不會。
2. can的其他用法
由can引導的一般疑問句可用來表示向對方提出請求或要求給予許可。
（1） 表示請求。如：
Can you look after my dog? 你能照看一下我的狗嗎？
Can / Could you please help me? 你能幫幫我嗎？
（2） 表示給予許可。如：
Can I play football here? 我可以在這裡踢足球嗎？
You can drive my car to the post office. 你可以開著我的車去郵局。
3. 對Can問句的簡略回答
對詢問能力的問句的回答可以說Yes, ...can.或No, ...can?謘t.，表示對能力的肯定或否定；對表示請求問句的回答可以說OK. / All right.，表示同意對方的請求。如：
—Can you speak English? 你會說英語嗎？
—Yes, I can. 是的，我會。
—Can I see your pencil box, please? 請問我可以看一下你的鉛筆盒嗎？
—All right. Here you are. 可以，給你。
