Unit 4: I'm doing and I do 2



The following verbs are not normally used in the present continuous: 

下面這些動詞不會用現在進行時


like want need prefer

know realize belong fit

suppose mean understand believe remember contain consist seem


I'm hungry. I want something to eat. (not I'm wanting)

我餓了，我想吃點東西。

Do you understand what I mean?

你理解我的意思嗎？ 

Anna doesn't seem very happy at the moment.

Anna看起來不開心。

Think

1) When think means 'believe' or 'have an opinion', we do not use the continuous: 當 think是「相信」或「表達看法」的時候，我們不用進行時。

2) When think means 'consider', the continuous is possible: 當think是考慮的意思時，就有可能用進行時。

See hear smell taste

1) We normally use the present simple (not continuous) with these verbs: 這些動詞，我們一般用一般現在時。

2) We often use can + see/hear/smell/taste:

look feel

You can use the present simple or continuous to say how somebody looks or feels now: 說某人看起來，或感覺如何的時候，我們可以用一般現在時，也可以用現在進行時。

but

He is selfish and He is being selfish

1) He's being= He's behaving I He's acting. Compare:

I can't understand why he's being so selfish. He isn't usually like that.

(being selfish = behaving selfishly at the moment)

我不理解他為什麼這麼自私。他平時不是那樣的。

He never thinks about other people. He is very selfish. (not He is being)

(= He is selfish generally, not only at the moment)

他從來不考慮別人，他非常自私。 

2) We use am/is/are being to say how somebody is behaving. lt is not usually possible in other sentences : 我們用am/is/are being來表示某人表現的如何，在其他情況中就不會這樣用。

it's hot today. (not lt is being hot) 

今天很熱。

Sarah is very tired . (not is being tired) 

Sarah非常累。
