＂party animal「是」動物派對＂或者」派對動物＂?

在學習英語的時候，我們或許總是用中式思維去思考，以致於英語說得不地道，總感覺哪裡怪怪的。例如一些歪果仁的常用俚語或口語表達並不能按字面意思去理解：

party animal

大多數人或許就會直接譯為「動物派對」或「派對動物」。這樣的翻譯肯定是不對的，正確的意思：

英文釋義：someone who enjoys parties and party activities very much and goes to as many as possible.

party animal：熱衷於參加社交聚會的人，派對狂

Sarah's a real party animal. She takes every opportunity he gets to go to a party.

Sarah真是一個派對狂，她不會放過任何一個參加派對的機會。

各種「聚會」表達：

dinner party：（在家舉行的）宴會，家宴

house-warming party：喬遷聚會

cocktail party：雞尾酒會

fancy-dress party/costume party：化裝舞會

baby/wedding shower：（為即將分娩或結婚的女性舉辦的）送禮會

as cool as a cucumber

「cucumber」這個詞就是我們平時所說的「黃瓜」，直譯就是「像黃瓜一樣涼爽」，這時就可以聯想到「冷靜」，其實呢，這則經典俚語最早出現在約翰·蓋伊在1732年的詩作《New song on new similes》。詩中他寫道：「I ... cool as a cucumber could see The rest of womankind」。現在這則俚語就是用來表示一個人鎮定自若，冷靜沉著。

He kept as cool as a cucumber in this dangerous situation.

在這個危險的環境中他表現的鎮定自若。

That's the ticket

That's the ticket ≠ 這就是那張票（×）

這個俚語源於十九世紀。「Ticket」在這裡指的是中了彩票的票或者是接濟窮人的免費食物券。當一個人餓著時，他得到一張免費食物券。這正是他所最需要的。所以「That's the ticket」就是用來表達：這正是我需要的。

That's the ticket. Kick harder with your legs and you'll soon learn to swim.

那就對了，用雙腳蹬得勁大些，你很快就能學會遊泳的。

它的意思並不是「手被綁起來」，而是表示「無能為力，沒有什麼辦法了」，當你很忙的時候，突然有人打電話，這時你可以對身邊的人說：「My hands are tied, and could you please give me a hand?」

註：give sb a hand 給某人幫助，給某人伸出援助之手

A：Is there any other way？

還有其他辦法嗎?

B：I am sorry. My hand are tied.

很抱歉，我實在無能為力了。
