Draw a blank的中文意思是忘記；腦中一片空白。其英文解釋是：When trying to recall something, to be unable to think of anything at all.
這個用語的來源非常有趣，可追溯至16世紀時的伊莉莎白女王一世，當時女王發行彩券以籌集財款。人們把寫有自己名字的紙條投入一個抽獎箱，而另一個抽獎箱則是放入寫有各種獎品的紙條，當然也有代表沒中的空白紙條。抽籤時，先抽出一個名字，接著再抽出獎項。如果參加者抽中空白的紙條（draw a blank），就表示他沒有中獎。
