三． (1)but與except的用法基本相同，都可表示「除了...」並常常可以互換使用，但but多與no, nothing, not anything, nobody, nowhere, all, anything, who等詞連用，but所引出的事物常是句子的重心，有一定的強調意味。
e.g.They are all from the Australia but / except John. 除了約翰外，他們都來自澳大利亞。
e.g. I never saw him reading anything but the newspaper.

註：( except 通常不用於句首，另外but也不能用於句首)：

四．apart from/aside from在不同的上下文中，既有besides的含義，又有except和except for的含義，要根據上下文來判別。
e.g.Apartfrom(=aside from/besides) English, he has a good command of Russian and French. 除英語外，他還精通俄語和法語。
e.g.Apart from (=aside from/except ) these fruit, I have nothing to eat. 除了這些水果之外，沒有什麼可以吃了。
e.g.He is an excellent students apart from (=aside from / except for ) carelessness. 除了粗心大意之外，他是一名優秀的學生。
