Abstract:In this introductory article for thespecial issue of Journal of Management Studies , entitled 『Leading Entrepreneurial Ventures:Individual and Team‐Based Perspectives』, we leverage insights in the extant literature as well as thoseinsights developed by the authors of the four articles published in response toour call for papers. Overall, we explore multiple nuanced questions withregards to research on entrepreneurship, research on leadership, and their intersection.Our goal is to begin to help guide research on entrepreneurship and leadership,and their intersection, for the next decade.

Abstract:This study advances a theory of howdifferent aspects of emotion regulation influence individual leader emergencein the intensely emotional context of nascent venture teams. Despite thegrowing amount of research on the role of leadership in the entrepreneurialprocess, the emergence of leaders in nascent venture teams has rarely beenexplored. Drawing on theories and research on leadership emergence and emotionregulation, we argue that the two aspects of emotion regulation (i.e.,reappraisal and suppression) exert opposite effects on the degree to whichnascent venture team members come to perceive an individual as a leader. Wealso theorize that team emotions arising from affective events moderate therelationship between reappraisal and leader emergence in such teams. Data from103 nascent venture teams without prior leaders show a negative relationshipbetween individuals』 trait disposition to suppress emotions and their emergenceas leaders, and a positive relationship between their trait disposition toreappraise emotions and their emergence as leaders. Moreover, we find thatnegative team emotions magnify the positive association between reappraisal andleader emergence, while positive team emotions mitigate it. We discuss theimplications of our findings for the literature on entrepreneurial leadership,entrepreneurial emotions, and leadership in general.

Abstract:How does entrepreneurial leadershipdrive the process of forming and advancing opportunity? Drawing from anethnographic field study of Nashville music producers, I develop a model ofentrepreneurial leadership as creative brokering – the practices and process bywhich entrepreneurs lead and mobilize a complex network of actors in co‐creating and advancing opportunity.I find that entrepreneurial leaders encounter three tensions as they advancethis process: 1) generating novel ideas and fitting them within the competitivelandscape; 2) incubating opportunity and seizing the moment in the market; and3) fostering experimentation and navigating hyper‐competition. I show when these tensions arise and identify six creativebrokering practices through which leaders leverage their brokerage role tonavigate these tensions in order to move opportunity forward. The paper offersa model of entrepreneurial leadership as creative brokering, extends extantcreative brokering scholarship to consider more distal market actors, and showshow creative brokering and leadership towards creative outcomes involveiteratively stepping forward to infuse market perspective and exert control,and stepping back to let others shine and co‐create ideas.

Abstract:Entrepreneurs need to act underconditions of uncertainty and resource constraints to bring new, often‐unrecognizable products to marketand convince an unknown set of stakeholders to support their endeavours. Thetype of action entrepreneurs take to navigate uncertain entrepreneurialcontexts is underspecified. We analysed 48 interviews with entrepreneurs toinductively identify an action‐oriented construct we labelled as entrepreneurial hustle – an entrepreneur’s urgent, unorthodox actions thatare intended to be useful in addressing immediate challenges and opportunitiesunder conditions of uncertainty. In a follow‐up study, we use an experimental vignette approach to assess the impactof an entrepreneur’s hustle onventure stakeholders. Findings suggest that entrepreneurial hustle positivelyinfluences stakeholder perceptions of the entrepreneur’s leadership effectiveness and aventure’s legitimacy,mediated by perceptions of the entrepreneur’s ability‐basedtrustworthiness. We conclude that entrepreneurial hustle is a fundamentalbehaviour that enables entrepreneurs to enrol new venture stakeholders and leadtheir entrepreneurial efforts.

Abstract:The hubris tradition of research hasbeen criticized for limiting its scope by associating hubris predominantly withdetrimental leadership behaviours. To counteract this bias, we provide a morenuanced exploration of hubris and consider both beneficial and detrimentalmanifestations of hubris in start‐up founders』 leadershipbehaviours. Our analysis, based on qualitative data from expert interviews andtwo case studies, indicates that, whilst hubristic start‐up founders are likely to failoverall, they also excel in creating and communicating visionary scenarios,steering employees through critical situations, and extracting commitment fromthird parties. These under‐researched 『bright』 manifestations of hubris allowstart‐up founders tolead their venture towards a stage, in which their visionary power andresilience become crucial prerequisites for economic progress. Our findingsextend knowledge on hubristic leadership, offer new directions for the hubristradition of research, and open up avenues for future research with a morebalanced view of hubris.
