9月未央，高三的同學們已經進入了最後的衝刺階段，準備迎接來年六月的人生獨木橋，而準備去美國留學的同學也不輕鬆，在準備標準化考試與學習之餘，也開始了緊羅密布的文書頭腦風暴和寫作。
文書的好壞一直以來是一個熟悉又神秘的話題。我們閱讀過大量的範文集錦，聽到過不同的老師不同的寫作風格和思路。到底什麼樣的文書才是好的呢？換句話說，美國頂尖名校在閱讀申請學生文書的時候，到底是如何評判文書的好壞？決定學生的錄取的呢？
要找到這些問題的答案，我們必須要走進美國名校招生辦中去，找到文書評審的秘訣。
Roger老師在對話來自史丹福大學，耶魯大學和杜克大學等招生官的時候，問到了這樣一個核心問題：
Howdo you eliminate or limit the effect of personal preferences during theadmission process? Especially on the essay section where there seems to be noset measuring metrics.
為了公平，你們如何規避或者減少招生官的個人偏好在錄取當中的的作用？特別是在沒有硬性標準的文書部分？
這些來自頂尖大學的招生官都有一個類似的回答：
Firstof all, we do not and should not try to eliminate personal variations duringthe candidate selection process. You have to understand that we are not justselecting the best people, but we are building a dynamic and vivid community,which means we love to admit students from different backgrounds and withdifferent stories. We train and trust our admission officers to be fair andjust, but we also respect and appreciate their own choices of candidates as wesee from the past that this can both ensure the high quality of incoming classand keep the diversity of our community. That being said, we do have in place acomprehensive training program for newly hired admission officers so they willknow what basics to look at or look for in application essays. We also holdannual trainings so we can keep pace in the ever-changing applicant pool.
首先，我們從來不去也不應該去嘗試規避招生官在招生過程當中的個人偏好。你需要明白我們不僅僅是在選取最優秀的學生，而是在打造一個有活力並且活躍的學校社區，這意味著我們需要從不同的背景和擁有不同故事的學生當中挑選錄取者。我們培訓並且信任我們的招生官會做到公正和公平，但是同時我們尊重並欣賞他們對申請者的選擇，因為在過去這樣的方式既能夠保證新生優秀的質量，同時也能保持學校生源多元化的傳統。在這個情況下，我們的確有一個完善的培訓體系，來讓新入職的招生官知道在文書裡面我們應該看重的和尋找的是一些什麼。並且，我們每年也會有全員的培訓來保證我們能和我們的申請者一起進步。
於是Roger老師繼續去追尋這個招生官培訓的內容，以及文書部分在這些頂尖名校到底是如何被評審的。最終在不懈的努力之下，名校招生官評審文書的秘密將首次展現在大家面前。
在大多數頂尖名校裡面，招生官的培訓和之後的文書評分體系，用的是一個名為4C的標準（對，品鑑鑽石用的是另外一個4C標準），分別是：
Correctness正確
Content內容
Clarity清晰
Creativity創意
這四項當中每一項所看重點是什麼呢？招生官做出了以下的解釋：
Correctness: Does the student demonstratefundamental competencyas a college level writer?
Content: Does the student demonstrate awell developed and mature approach tocommunicating the topic? Is the writing reflective, insightful, focusedand authentic? Does itdemonstrate a reflectiveand contemplative mind?
Clarity: Does the student use sentence and paragraph structure, word usage, syntax, vocabulary, andadherence to principals of sound grammar in a way that results in crisp, clearand concise communicationof his/her thoughts?
Creativity: How well does the student keepthe reader engaged?Does the student deliver the topic in a creative manner? To what degree, if any, does theessay demonstrate a literary dexteritythat teases the reader into wanting more?
這些問題都來源於招生官在評審一個學生的文書的時候，會問自己的問題。其中一些最關鍵的詞眼：
Competency, Developed, Mature, Reflective,Insightful, Focused, Authentic, Contemplative, Paragraph Structure, WorldUsage, Syntax, Concise, Engaged, Creative, Dexterity
其實名校招生官在評審大家的文書的時候，是會根據以上說到的四點進行打分的，再把文書部分的打分匯入Academic Index申請評分體系（這是頂尖大學用的篩選評分體系，下幾次欄目當中，Roger老師再為大家細緻講解）當中去。大家在構思和書寫文書的時候，不妨看看是否在這些關鍵點上做到了極致，同時用豐富的情感打動招生官，那麼離進入自己夢想的學校也就更近了一步。
