anything but 的意思是：絕不是，根本不是。如：
I』ll do anything but that.
我絕不會幹那種事。
The party was anything but a success.
晚會根本不成功。
The fight is anything but finished.
鬥爭絕沒有結束。
The hotel was anything but satisfactory.
這家旅館一點不讓人滿意。
注意:
1. anything but 有時可單獨使用。如：
I don’t mean he’s lazy ---- anything but!
我不是說他懶，他根本不懶。
2. anything but 不僅可用於事物，也可用於人。如：
He is anything but a poet.
他絕不是詩人。
He was anything but polite.
他根本沒有一點禮貌。
nothing but（除……外；什麼也沒有；只有）後面可接
(1) 名詞或代詞：
For miles and miles I could see nothing except (= but) a great fire and lots of smoke.
一連好幾英裡，除了大火和濃煙我什麼也看不見。
Under the soil there is nothing but sand.
在這層土壤下邊只有沙子。
(2) 不定式：
A cold-blooded animal has no choice but to lie down and sleep.
冷血動物別無選擇，只好躺下來睡覺。
（註：這種句型中的不定式通常要帶to；但當其前面的動詞是do，或只有情態動詞時，but後面的不定式要省去to。）
例如：
He did nothing but sleep all day long.
他什麼也不幹，成天睡覺。
I can but obey it.（= I can do nothing but obey it.）
我只能服從。
再如：
Politeness costs nothing but wins everything.
