Many students who are aiming to be fashion designers, graphic designers, interior designers, architects or web designers decide to study overseas to achieve their goals. So, why is studying overseas and advantage? And where are the best places to study?

Why should I study overseas?
答案很簡單，歐美國家教授藝術和設計的方式與國內學生所習慣的非常不同：在國內學習藝術與設計，重點是技術，而在歐美國家，學生學習的是如何釋放和發展自己的創造性想法。當然，這並不意味著「能畫得好，縫得整齊，或者理解建築或網站設計背後的科學」這些技術技能不重要。但是，要想在頂級時裝公司找到一份工作，或者創建自己的成功設計企業，你首先需要的是創造力。
The simple answer is that the way art and design is taught in Europe or the USA is very different to what Chinese students are used to. This is because the focus in China is on technique whereas in Europe and the USA what students learn is how to release and develop their own creative ideas. This doesn’t mean that technical skills – being able to draw well, or sew neatly, or understand the science behind designing buildings or websites – is not important. But to get a job with a top fashion company, or create your own successful design business, you need above all to be creative.
在英國學習藝術和設計的中國留學生通常是最成功的案例。因為他們在中國的學校課程中有良好的技術背景，然後英國的大學和藝術學院教他們如何將自己的想法用創新的、令人興奮的方式呈現。
Chinese students studying art and design in the UK at Bachelor degree or Master’s degree level are often the most successful students because they have a good technical background from their school lessons in China, and the UK universities and art colleges then teach them how to develop their own ideas into new and exciting ways.

Where is the best place to study?
不得不說，歐洲和美國都有很好的藝術和設計大學。但如果你看看頂尖的設計公司和建築公司，那些在英國學習過的學生通常都在頂級職位上。
There are good art and design universities across Europe and the USA. But if you look at the top design companies and architecture companies, students who have studied in the UK are often in the top jobs.
1、如果你在英國攻讀的是時裝設計專業的學士學位，那麼從3年學位的第一天開始，你就專攻時裝設計。而在美國，通常很晚才有機會學習專業。
Firstly, if you study a bachelor’s degree in, for example, Fashion Design in the UK then from day 1 of your 3-year degree you specialise in Fashion Design. In the USA you normally do not get the opportunity to specialise until much later.
2、英國以提供最具創意的課程而聞名，學生通常被鼓勵和引導去發展自己的想法、風格和項目。你可能會有自己的工作室，在那裡你可以做自己的項目，由老師一對一的建議和指導，而不會像其他學生一樣坐在教室裡做同樣的事情。學校聘用有才華的藝術家和設計師，在教學的同時提供靈感。
Secondly, the UK has the reputation for offering the most creative courses, where you will be encouraged and guided to develop your own ideas, styles and projects. You will not sit in classes doing the same things as the other students, you will instead have your own studio space where you will work on your own projects, being advised and guided by the teachers on a 1:1 basis. And these teachers will be talented artists and designers, employed by the university to provide inspiration as well as teaching.
3、英國的藝術大學和學院也意識到職業發展的重要性，並將與著名的設計公司有密切的聯繫，這將給你提供很好的實習和工作機會。
The UK art universities and colleges also realise the importance of career development and will have close links with famous design companies which will give you great opportunities for internships and jobs.
英國的關注點是創造力。頂級藝術大學，如倫敦藝術大學 (它的著名學院包括中央聖馬丁學院和倫敦時裝學院，格拉斯哥藝術學院或皇家藝術學院)會根據申請者的想法和藝術作品集來評估。英國的藝術設計大學通常不會把注意力放在學習成績上面，所以創作上如果有專家的幫助，並且選擇合適的藝術作品來展示，申請的成功率會加大。
As the focus in the UK is on creativity, if you want to get a place at a top art university such as University of the Arts London (whose famous colleges include Central St Martins and the London College of Fashion), Glasgow School of Art or the Royal College of Art then they will judge you on your portfolio of your own ideas and art. So, to be successful in your application, you need to get help from experts in creating and choosing suitable art pieces to show the universities. They will not be very interested in your academic record, so you need to get as much help as you can on creating the portfolio.
