常用漢語俚語(Ⅲ)

This literally translates as "Somebody has straight guts"

In Chinese slang it means someone is frank or outspoken.

Tā shì yīgè zhíchángzi de rén, yībān nǐ dōu néng zhīdào tā zài xiǎng shénme.

他是一個直腸子的人,一般你都能知道他在想什麼。

(He is a frank and outspoken person, generally you know what he is thinking.)

The direct translation of this means "light bulbs"

In Chinese slang it means third wheel. One who deters the socialization of a couple, perhaps when 

being invited out of pity or through a feeling of duty. 

Nǐ gēn nǚ péngyǒu qù chīfàn, wǒ jiù bù qù le, wǒ cái bùxiǎng zuò diàndēngpào.

你跟女朋友去吃飯,我就不去了,我才不想做電燈泡

(If you are going to have dinner with your girlfriend, I won’t go. I don’t want to be a third wheel.)

Literally it means to embrace Buddha's feet and pray for help (in time of emergency).

In Chinese slang it means to cram (for something) , to seek help at the last moment or to make a frantic last-minute effort.


Kuàiyào qímò kǎole, wǒ yào lái bàofójiǎo.

快要期末考了,我要來抱佛腳

(My final is coming up, and I have to cram for it.)

[sān fēnzhōng rèdù]

Literally it means 3-minute passion

This Chinese slang refers to a person having a limited passion or a passion that doesn't last long toward something/someone that he/she liked/loved/had a passion about.

Wǒ xiǎng xué gāngqín, suǒyǐ děi mǎi yī jià.

A:我想學鋼琴,所以得買一架。

(A: I would like to learn piano therefore I will need to buy one.)


Wǒ jiànyì nǐ  yào zǐxì kǎolǜ, yīnwèi nǐ jīngcháng zhǐyǒu sān fēnzhōng rèdù.

B:我建議你要仔細考慮,因為你經常只有三分鐘熱度

(B: I suggest that you think carefully as you are always a '3-minute passion' person.)

Literally it means 「crow's mouth」

In Chinese slang it means jinxing mouth.

Chinese believe the crow cawing could bring an unlucky spell on people. So, anyone who has a jinxing mouth is said to have a wuyazui or 「crow's mouth".

Míngtiān de gōngzuò bàogào nǐ dōu zhǔnbèi hǎo le ma? Nǐ kě bié lòu le shénme zhòngyào de shìqíng a!

A:明天的工作報告你都準備好了嗎?你可別漏了什麼重要的事情啊!

(A: Are you ready for tomorrow's work presentation? Don't miss anything important!)


Nǐ bié wūyā zuǐ!

B:你別烏鴉嘴

(B: Don't  jinx it!)
