This week we answer a question from Julio in Peru. He writes: I would like to know the difference between BUY and PURCHASE and when to use each of them. - Julio, Lima, Peru.
本周,我們將回答來自秘魯的胡裡奧提出的一個問題。他寫道: 我想知道BUY和PURCHASE的區別以及什麼時候使用它們。——來自秘魯利馬市的胡裡奧。
Dear Julio, Thanks for asking about these words. As you know, "buy" and "purchase" can be used in similar sentences.
親愛的胡裡奧,感謝您問到了這些單詞。如你所知,buy和purchase可用於類似的語句中。
They can both be used either as a noun or a verb. One difference between them is how formal they sound.
它們都可以用作名詞或動詞。它們之間的區別之一是聽起來有多正式。
Compare the following sentences. Put "buy" or "purchase" in the space. I would like to ______ a new home.
比較下列句子。在空格中填入buy或purchase。我想要 ______一套新房子。
She wants to _____ a hamburger. Like most English speakers, I would say "purchase" for the home and "buy" for the hamburger.
她想要 _____一個漢堡包。跟大多數講英語的人士一樣,我會說purchase一套新房,buy一個漢堡包。
You probably wonder, why does English have two words with exactly the same meaning? We can understand this better with a little history.
你可能想知道,為什麼英語中會有兩個含義完全相同的單詞?我們可以通過一小段歷史來更好地理解這點。
English developed from the languages of Germanic tribes of Northern Europe. Words from that time are what we call Anglo-Saxon.
英語是由北歐日耳曼部落的語言發展而來的。那個時候的言語就是我們所說的盎格魯 — 撒克遜語。
In the year 1066, William the Conqueror and his forces began to take over England. William was from Normandy, in France.
在1066年,徵服者威廉和他的軍隊開始佔領英格蘭。威廉來自法國的諾曼第。
For the next 300 years, everyone in English courts and in government spoke French. English was a language for everyday use.
在接下來的300年裡,英國法院和政府裡的每個人都說法語。英語是一種日常使用的語言。
As a result, French had a great effect on the English language: about 10,000 French words were added to English. We still use many of them today.
因此,法語對英語產生了巨大的影響:英語中增加了大約10,000個法語單詞。我們今天仍在使用其中許多的單詞。
As you might suspect, English speakers use the French words for more formal situations and the Anglo-Saxon words for common ideas and things.
正如你所猜想的,說英語的人士在較正式的情況下使用法語, 而在表達共同的看法和事物上使用盎格魯-撒克遜語。
One way you can tell the difference between the French words and the Anglo-Saxon words is their length. Anglo-Saxon words, like "buy," are often short, while "purchase" and other French words are longer.
一種區分法語單詞和盎格魯-撒克遜語單詞的方法是它們的長度。盎格魯-撒克遜語單詞通常較短,例如buy,而purchase和其它法語單詞通常更長。
Julio asked how to use "buy" and "purchase". We usually use "buy" as a verb.
胡裡奧問如何使用"buy"和"purchase"。我們通常將buy用作動詞。
For example, I will buy food for the party. It is not so common to see "buy " as a noun, but you do find it in cases like this:
例如, 我將為這次聚會採購食物。"buy"用作名詞並不常見,但是在以下情況下確實可以看到:
The police stopped a drug buy on the street. We often use the verb "purchase" for when legal documents are involved, such as in:
警察在街頭阻止了一起毒品交易。當涉及法律文件時,我們通常使用purchase,例如:
The government purchased a new contract for 1,000 airplanes. And you should use "purchase" when you need a noun form, as in:
政府籤署了新合同,採購了1000架飛機。當你需要使用名詞形式時,應使用purchase,例如:
You made a smart purchase when you bought gas before the price went up. In summary, try to use "buy" for simple actions, and "purchase" for more formal exchanges of money for goods.
你在油價上漲前買了汽油,做了一筆好買賣。總之,請嘗試在簡單行為中使用buy,而在更加正式的買入交易中使用purchase。
