今天我們繼續閱讀：「Chinese Adventure」

Let's review the story first.

It was Gran's birthday.

They all gave Gran presents.

cards, bath salts, power screw driver, and a vase.

Gran was pleased with the presents.

Gran had a surprise for everyone.

She had a box of fireworks.

Nadim and Anneena came to the firework party.

What a beautiful firework!

But dogs don't like fireworks.

so Floppy hid under a little table.

Mum had a birthday cake for Gran.

Biff went into the front room to get her camera.

She saw Gran's vase on the floor.

It was broken.

Biff showed the children the broken vase.

I hope they can mend it.
Suddenly, the key began to glow.

Where would the magic take them?

What will happen next?

The magic took the children back in time.

It took them to China long ago.

魔法把孩子們帶回了過去。

它把孩子們帶到了很久以前的中國。

Why did the magic key take the children to China?

Gran's vase is made in China.

Maybe the story is about the vase?

But where were the children now?

Nadim knew where they were.

"We are in the Forbidden City," he said.

Nadim 知道他們在哪裡。

他說：我們是在紫禁城。

Forbidden City 紫禁城

Forbidden /for-bid-den/ 禁止 v. 禁止的 adj.

"Why is it called that?" asked Chip.

Chip 問：為什麼叫它紫禁城？

That's a good question!

"The Emperor lives here," said Nadim.

"He lives here with his family.

Other people are not allowed to come here.

That's why it is called the Forbidden City."

Nadim 說：國王居住在這裡。

他和他的家人住在這裡。

沒有得到允許的其他人都不準進入。

這就是為什麼叫做紫禁城。

Forbidden City

禁止進入的城市

在英語裡，翻譯的還是很形象的是吧。

但我們為什麼叫它 「紫禁城」 ？

而不是 「藍禁城」，「紅禁城」，「綠禁城」 呢？

「紫」 這個字來頭不小，

不過也說法不一，

首先，有【紫氣東來】的說法

相傳春秋末年，道家創始人老子即將出函谷關時，守關人看見有紫氣從東而至。不久，老子騎著青牛從東方而來，守關人便認為老子是聖人，請他寫下了著名的《道德經》。

因此紫氣便被認為是具有吉祥的含義，也預示著聖賢和寶物的出現。古人把祥瑞之氣稱為紫雲，仙人居住的地方稱為紫海，將神仙稱為紫泉。由此可見，紫禁城中的 「紫」 是大有來頭的。

又因為皇帝居住的地方守衛森嚴，尋常百姓難以接近，紫禁城。

還有一種說法和【星象】有關

古代的時候，天上的星桓被相師分為三桓、二十八星宿及其他星座。而紫薇桓是代稱天子的，處於三桓的中央。古時候有 「紫微正中」 的說法。既然天子為紫微，那天子住的地方就是紫宮了。有著無比高的尊嚴，嚴謹侵擾，所以叫做紫禁城。

到底哪個才是正確的出處呢？

There was a fierce dog in the Forbidden City.

It didn't like Floppy.

紫禁城裡有條非常兇猛的狗。

它不喜歡 Floppy。

fierce 兇猛的

比如說：

A lion is fierce.

A tiger is fierce.

The fierce dog growled and barked,

but Floppy did't want to fight.

growl 怒吼、咆哮

bark 就是狗叫聲

那隻兇惡的狗大吼大叫著。

但是 Floppy 不想和他打架。

"Stop it!" shouted Chip.

Some women ran up and grabbed the dogs.

Chip 大叫：阻止他們！

幾個女人跑了上來，抓住了狗狗們。

grab means catch 抓住

The children were worried.

"Oh help!" said Chip.

孩子們非常擔心。

Chip 說：哦，救命！

為什麼 Chip 會說：Oh help！

因為他們來到的是 Forbidden City

外人禁止進入的，

所以，如果他們擅自闖進來的話，會...

對了，是會被抓住的。

They will be put into prison.

他們會被關進監獄。

The women took the children and Floppy to the Emperor.

女人把孩子們和 Floppy 帶到了皇帝那裡。

"What are you doing in the Forbidden City?" he shouted.

"People are not allowed in here."

他叫到：你們在紫禁城幹嘛？

這裡是不準進入的。

allow 允許

be allowed 被允許

The Emperor was cross.

Floppy was upset.

The Emperor called his soldiers.

"Put them in prison!" he shouted.

"That will teach them to come to the Forbidden City."

皇帝叫來了他的士兵。

他喊道：把他們關到監獄裡。

那會讓他們得到教訓，不要再來紫禁城。

Why did the children must go to prison?

As Nadim said,

"The Emperor lives here with his family.

Other people are not allowed to come here.

"I think we've upset him," said Biff.

upset 有好多種意思：

做動詞的時候：v. 使煩惱、使生氣

做形容詞的時候：adj. 難過的、失望的、沮喪的

這裡是做動詞用。

Biff 說：我想我們讓他生氣了。

The Emperor had two children.

They were twins and they looked exactly the same.

What are twins？

If two people are twins, they have the same mother and were born on the same day. That means 雙胞胎. 雙胞胎最大的特點是：他們大多長的很像。

皇帝呢，有2個孩子。

他們是雙胞胎，他們看上去一模一樣。

The twins spoke to the Emperor.

One of them pointed to the children.

雙胞胎和皇帝說話了。

其中的一個指著孩子們。

The twins wanted to play with Kipper.

雙胞胎們想要和 Kipper 一起玩。

Would the Emperor allow the children to play with the twins？

會得到皇帝的允許嗎？

"I will put you in prison tomorrow," said the Emperor.

"Today you can play with the twins."

"Hooray," said the twins.

皇帝說：那我明天再把你們關到監獄裡吧。

今天你們可以和雙胞胎一起玩。

雙胞胎說：萬歲！

The twins had never played with other children.

They didn't know how to play football.

雙胞胎從來沒有和別的孩子玩過。

他們不知道怎麼樣踢足球。

One of the twins kicked Nadim.

"Ow!" said Nadim. "That was my leg."

雙胞胎中的一個踢到了 Nadim。

Nadim 說：奧，我的腿啊。

The children had so much fun playing football.

The twins were happy, too.

Suddenly, the ball rolled away and fell down a grating.

roll 就是 「滾」

grating 是：牆上或者地上的柵欄

突然，球滾開了，掉進了地上的柵欄裡。

The ball was lost.

The twins looked upset.

"Oh no!" said the twins.

"Now the ball is lost."

Both the twins began to cry.

雙胞胎們說：哦不！

現在球被弄丟了。

雙胞胎兩個開始哭了起來。

Biff and Chip pulled up the grating.

Biff 和 Chip 把柵欄拉了起來。

What did they find?

Nadim could see some steps.

He began to go down them.

Nadim 看到有些階梯。

他順著階梯開始往下走。

"Hurry up," said Biff.

"We don't want the Emperor to put us in prison."

Biff 說：快點。

我們不想被皇帝關到監獄裡。

如果 twins 一直這麼哭下去的話，

也許皇帝今天就會把他們關到監獄裡的呢。

Nadim went into a big cellar.

cellar 地下室

Nadim 進入了一個很大的地下室。

It was full of cobwebs and dust.

cobwebs 蜘蛛網

dust 灰塵

地下室裡到處都是蜘蛛網和灰塵。

What did he find in the cellar?

Nadim called the others.

"Look at these giant vases," he said.

"They look like Gran's vase."

Nadim 叫來了其他小夥伴。

他說：看那些巨大的花瓶。

他們看上去像極了奶奶的那個。

What will happen to these vase?

Will they find some other things in the cellar?

What will happen next?
