Vouliagment -- China and India are taking the problem of intellectual property piracy more seriously, a senior World Trade Organization official said Thursday.
Harsha Vardhana Singh, a deputy director general at the WTO, described copyright and patent infringements as "a very serious problem" on a global level.
The United States filed a complaint with the WTO this month accusing China of violating trade commitments by failing to protect copyrights, patents and other intellectual property rights.
Two US business groups in China, in a survey released Thursday, said the volume of pirated products had increased despite increased enforcement by authorities. The survey was carried out by the American Chamber of Commerce in China and the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.
"China ... now sees the protection of international property rights as important," Singh said during a business conference near Athens on International Intellectual Property Day.
He said India had also shown increased vigilance regarding piracy.
"The Indians have started to see it as important," he said.
Kristal Alley, a policy adviser at the US Chamber of Commerce, told the conference that developing countries were finally addressing the issue because they will have to protect their own brands as their economies and industries develop.
"We do see positive change in China," she said.
Singh also warned that increasing opposition to globalization poses a threat to the benefits of growing world trade and foreign investment.
"I think it should be taken very seriously," he said, adding that "the proper response to (globalization) is not protectionism."
