1.To tell in advance
What level do you desire your English to achieve? How long do you spend learning English every day?
Some students always think that they are not much of an English learner, so I have to ask them one question – how much time have you spent on English? How can your English get improved if you always brush aside the reading materials and just cram for the English exam a day or two before the exam? Consequently, it is bound to generate your fear for English tests. For me, due to the deep love for English, I have been studying it almost every day, and sometimes I will study it for two or three hours every day even on holidays (Just take myself for example. You don’t need to expend too much time, actually. Frankly speaking, it mainly depends on your personal goals and self-positioning. If you don’t aim high in English, an average of 20 minutes per day is fine. For instance, opting to do some reading practices and memorize dozens of words per week. Meanwhile, it is also advisable to allocate time for books and courses related to your major, etc.).
2. Different sections about English learning
(1) CET4&CET6
While gearing up for the tests, do reading and listening exercises of the past years' exam papers, and memorize some sentence patterns and expressions. Although long-term effort matters a lot in English learning, short-term sprints can also bring great benefits. For students who are not good at English, it is recommended to finish more past years' exam papers, then read the passages intensively and memorize the words you don’t know (There are articles about intensive reading on Zhihu, take a look if you want).
Listening is particularly worth paying attention to. A few days before taking CET6, I did listening comprehension practice every day. On average, I just made 1 to 3 errors in total, but I totally got puzzled in the examination room, struggling to understand the recordings. The listening parts of CET4 and CET6 are, generally, quite different from high school, and in most cases more difficult (not knowing the questions in advance). What’s worse, lack of practice also precludes higher accuracy. Thus, be sure to practice more, find a suitable way to figure out the questions, and improve your overall listening level. And it is also advised to do papers in a simulated examination environment for your state, after all, differs significantly between personal studying booth and examination room.
(2) Competitions
Participating in competitions is definitely a good way to urge yourself to improve your English ability, ensuring accurate goals and powerful motivation in the short term, and enabling you to focus on improving at least one aspect of your ability. For example, when I was preparing for the writing contest, I bought the official textbook by the Foreign Research Institute, which really introduced me to English writing. There is more to English writing than simply piling up advanced sentence patterns and words. It involves the layout, writing methods (such as the argumentation methods, and logic), use of expressions, English thinking, etc. But excellent expressions can really burnish the article. What’s more, for some competitions, it is very likely that you cannot finish the paper within the requied time, making it necessary to do timing practice ahead of the contest. And I』d also like to mention that many English official accounts have various competition notices, so pay attention if you want.
For those with higher goals in English, it is advised to assign additional learning tasks for yourselves. In the main, English proficiency is omni-directional, with listening, speaking, reading, and writing. While training these four parts separately, you will find that they are all connected, which means these abilities are likely to improve as a whole. In addition, so as to learn efficiently, while making good use of the continuous time (such as a few hours at your disposal), don't forget the scattered time (such as memorizing words on the subway).
3. Sharing of my learning resources
Listening:KeKe English app (rich listening resources), VOA news, NPR news, Round Table, etc. Try to type out the original text.
Speaking: Follow the listening materials and talk in English.
Reading: Read foreign journals intensively and other English articles extensively (Such as China Daily, which is sort of difficult. Of course, reading listening materials and doing CET4&CET6 tests are also practicing reading).
Writing: Collect excellent expressions during intensive reading and learn English writing from the official textbook of the writing competition.
Others: Recite words (BaiCiZhan app)
4. Find a learning method that suits you
Although there are a dazzling variety of learning methods, I hope that you can find the one that you favor. English studying is a gradual process and your learning methods will be adjusted automatically at varying stages. For example, a few methods I am utilizing now are those I couldn't understand before. So there is no need to have qualms about sticking to a method that you are not sure if it is proper. After all, a way works best when you enjoy it.
