一、but用法連詞，表示讓步關係，意思是「除非，要不是」，常與that一起構成but that，相當於「if…not」。例如：I would have failed but that your helped me.要不是你們幫助我，我就會失敗。
二、but用作連詞，放在否定詞或疑問詞之後，作從屬關係，表示否定意義，可相不於that not. 例如：Never a month passed but she writes to her parents. 她沒有一個有不給她雙親寫信。
三、but用於否定詞加doubt，question，deny等到之後，沒有實在意義，只相當於關係連詞that. 例如：There's no doubt but he is a thief.毫無疑問，他是一個賊。
