instead of 用法歸納
Instead of 的意思是「代替……」、「而不……」，其主動用法如下：
1．作為短語介詞，insteadof 後面常跟名詞、代詞和動名詞，偶爾也跟複合結構。例如：
I have come instead of my brother.
I will go instead of you.
If I hadn’t got a cold I』d be working instead of lying here in bed.
Instead of doing it himself, he got a man to do it.
Instead of lending a hand, he laughed at us.
他不僅沒有幫我們一把，反而嘲笑我們。
They must make up their own minds instead of our making up their minds for them. 他們必須自己做出決定，而不是有我們來代替他們作決定。
It’s me that should ask you instead of you asking me. 應該是我問你而不是你問我。
2． Instead of 後面還可跟形容詞、副詞、動詞、不定式、介詞短語和從句。請看下面的例句：
Taking exercise every day makes him look youngerinstead of older. 每天鍛鍊身體使他顯得更年輕而不是蒼老。（連接形容詞）
But the businessman grew worse instead of better. 但這位商人的情況沒有好轉，反而進一步惡化了。
I go to bed late instead of early.
我總是很晚才睡。（連接副詞）
That increased instead of decreased our courage.
這增加而不是減少了我們的勇氣。（連接動詞）
The price rises every day instead of sinks.
He proposes to do some work instead of to watch television.
他提議做些工作而不是看電視。（連接不定式）
A word of encouragement might have made me respect instead of hate him.他若是說一句鼓勵的話，那麼我或許不會恨他，反而會敬重他。（連接不定式）
In warm weather he often reads under a tree instead of in the library.
天氣暖和的時候，他常常是在樹下而不是在圖書館裡讀書。（連接介詞短語）
As a result, silver begar to flow out of, instead of into, the country.
結果，銀開始流出而不是流入該國。
3． Instead 單獨使用的時候是副詞，常用於句末。例如：
We』ve no coffee. Would you like tea instead.
我沒有咖啡了，喝茶行嗎？
It will take days by car, so let’s fly instead..
坐汽車得好幾天時間，所以我們還是改乘飛機吧。
不過，用instead的句子也可以改成instead of：
She never studies. Instead, she plays tennis all day.= Instead of studying , she tennis all days. 她成天打網球，而不是學習。
He didn’t give John the money, but he gave it to meinstead. =Instead of giving John the money, he gave it to me.
