A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell.
一位農民有一些需要賣的幼犬
He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard.

As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

"Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies."
「先生」，他說，我想要買一隻您的小狗。
"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat of the back of his neck, "these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."
農民擦了他脖子後面的汗說：好的！這些小狗得父母都是純種得，他們都很優質值錢。
The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer.

"I've got 89 cents. Is that enough at least to take a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer.

And with that he let out a whistle. "Here, Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.
多莉從狗捨出來，跑下斜坡，後面跟著四隻小毛球。
The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.
小男孩使他的臉貼近籬笆得鏈條，眼裡充滿了喜悅
As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse.
當狗狗們朝著籬笆前進的時候，小男孩注意到在狗舍裡面除了活躍還有一些別的東西。
Slowly another little fur ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid.
另一隻小毛球慢慢的出現了，從斜坡上滑下來，這一隻明顯更小。
Then the little pup began awkwardly wobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up.
然後這隻小狗開始向前笨拙得搖擺，竭盡全力趕上其它只。
"I want that one," the little boy said, quickly pointing to the runt.
我想要這隻。小男孩快速指向這隻小矮子說。
The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."
農民跪在小男孩的一邊說:孩子，你不會想要那隻小狗得。他天生不能夠跑，所以不會像其它的小狗那樣陪你玩。
With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers.
小男孩一步一步得從籬笆退回來，到了下面，捲起了他的另一隻褲腿。
In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.
以至於他可以露出來一個鋼支架，支架一邊連接他自己的腿，另一邊向下連接一個特別製作的鞋。
Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see, sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands."
小男孩回頭看農民說「你看先生，我自己也不能跑的那麼好，小狗需要一個理解它的人」
With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefullyhe handed it to the little boy.
農民熱淚盈眶彎下身抱起小狗，將它小心翼翼地交給了小男孩
"How much?" asked the little boy.
「多少錢？」小男孩問
"No charge," answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love and understanding."
「不要錢」，農民回答說：「愛和理解是無價的」。
