在綜合能力高級閱讀課程當中當中，經常會出現一些長難句，長難句的構成因素一般是由於句子結構複雜，詞彙含義晦澀難懂，甚至裡面還有大量的熟詞僻義，今天我們舉個otherwise,這個大家熟悉不能再熟悉，但是卻不是很多人熟悉它的含義。
說到otherwise, 同學們會想到它的最常見的意思，即：「否則」，但是otherwise在高級閱讀當中，除了出現在句首，還經常出現在句子的其它位置，所以，對於otherwise的含義就應該要有多方面的理解了。
舉兩個簡單的例子：
• She is not very clever, but otherwise she's a nice girl.
• 她並不聰明，但在其他方面，她倒是個好姑娘。
• The rent is a bit high, but otherwise the house is satisfactory.
• 這所房子租金貴了點,但在其他方面倒是令人滿意的
• We'll get there somehow, by boat or otherwise.
• 我們總要設法去那裡的, 乘船也好, 用其他辦法也好。
在綜合能力部高級閱讀課程中曾經出現過這樣的句子，句子並不是很難，但是otherwise的出現，讓很多同學對這些句子含義只能是囫圇吞棗，無法透徹理解。

解釋：
例1：

• 創新者與其他人的主要區別在於處理問題的方法。每個人都有想法，但是創新者會自覺地鑽研自己的想法，並且不斷努力直到證明想法切實可行，或不可實現為止。
• 注釋：在本句當中，otherwise譯成practicable的反義，即：不可實現
例2：
• For a long period of time and in many parts of the country, a traveler was a welcome break in an otherwise dull existence.(97年考研閱讀passage2)
• 過去很長一段時間，在美國很多地方，旅行者的突然來訪總是頗受歡迎，因為沒有這些旅行者的來訪，生活就不免單調乏味。
• 注釋1：在本句中，otherwise譯成沒有這些旅行者的話。break譯成突然來訪

例3：

• 換句話來說，在新聞採編室文化中存在著一種慣常的敘事套路，這種套路給新聞報導提供了一個主幹框架和一個現成的故事敘事結構，如果不用這套路的話，新聞報導就會變得紛繁蕪雜。
