Sister Carrie's reading report.

In the first weeks, I read one of the most famous works of American literature, sister Carrie.I also found the movie version of the novel to watch, the film and the novel, after reading, so that people are very shocked at the same time, and once again let me experience the fact that Carrie's sister is in the times. This work tells the story of how the rural girl Carrie came from the bottom of the society and became the most popular actress, with a delicate display of Carrie's living environment and the experience. It is a distinctive feature of realism, which reveals the tragedy of the American dream in the early 20th century, revealing the instinctive themes that drive people to enjoy the ultimate disillusionment. It shows that there is no real happiness in the American capitalist society where money is centered. But the novel and the film still have a few different, these different also let the novel and the movie story end have the different charm.

This reading report has roughly two parts: the first part is the different part of the novel and the film, and the second part is my perception of the work of sister Carrie.

ⅠThe difference between the novel and the movie.

A. In the novel not in the movie

a. At the beginning of the novel, sister Carrie came to Chicago, and went to her sister's home and found her sister was not relaxed; After finding the hint of his sister and brother-in-law, after a long period of inner struggle, he finally decided to go to the street to find a job. However, it is not easy to find a job that meets your own requirements, and after many times of being ignored and ridiculed, sister Carrie finally found a job in a factory with a meager salary in a factory.

b. In the third chapter of the novel, Carrie found a job, and she was very happy that it was not difficult to live in Chicago. After returning home, she told her sister that she wanted to go to the theatre, but the family thought it was very bad, and Carrie's proposal was ignored by them.

c. In the sixth chapter of the novel, the winter came, and Carrie didn't have enough money to buy the winter clothes, and after she managed to discuss it with her sister, thought he would get rid of the difficulties in front of him.But a sudden heavy rain and cold wind caused Carrie to catch a cold, so she had a high fever and lost her work in the factory after three days at home.

d. Drouet's appearance is pleasing, and his mouth is smooth. He is not a bad man, but he is shallow, loving, and loving gentle land. After he lived with Carrie, he still never changed the nature of love, and was always flirting with the maid.

e. In the 36 and 37 chapters of the novel, Carrie and Mrs. Vance became increasingly aware that life is not what they want, and the dissatisfaction with Hurstwood is getting bigger and bigger.Carrie's heart can not help to produce disgust. The burden of life made Hurstwood more and more uneasy, and eventually he went into the casino with his last money. At the casino, Hurstwood was more frustrated and anxious, and things were not as good as he expected, and his money was less and less at the table, and at last he had only 100.

f. In chapter 41 of the novel. When Hurstwood and Carrie eloped to New York,Because the remaining deposits are less and less and 2 people are unwilling to reduce their identity to find a job to maintain life, their living standards have gone from bad to worse.Even survival is a problem. The gap between the two is more and more, and the number of quarrels is more and more.In the end, Hurstwood had to find a job as a driver, but he soon gave up.

g. In the novel, after numerous quarrels,'s delay in Hurstwood is more and more intense, and Carrie is more and more decadent and more decadent. He is not as handsome, spiritual, and generous as he used to be, but he doesn't know what to do, but he can't do anything. In this way, Carrie finally abandoned Hurstwood and moved into a new house with a date to start a new life.

h. In chapter 42 of the novel, Hurstwood went out for a while, and when he came home at night, he found some strange things at home and found that Carrie had moved away and left only 20 yuan.

i. In the last few chapters of the novel, Carrie's art career is becoming more and more prosperous, and her posters appear in newspapers, magazines and streets.Hurstwood saw these, and felt that Carrie was farther away from him, but at this time the little self-esteem had not been lost, and he did not want to ask Carrie for the living expenses. In the end he had no son, no place to live, and he fell into the abyss of poverty.Like the rest of the homeless, he went to the street begging, to the welfare home, the monastery to accept relief, go to the bread shop and wait for the free delivery of bread. He even found Carrie and asked her for money. Finally, on a cold night of the storm, Hurstwood opened the gas in the dark, then killed himself and ended his bumpy life.

B. in the movie not in the novel

a. In the film, Carrie was hurt by her finger at work, so the boss asked someone to replace her, and she lost her job.

b. In the film, Hurstwood and Carrie fled to New York, and first they had a very good life, and Carrie was pregnant, with their children. But last time, when Hurstwood's wife found them, had an accident, which made them very sad and had a big fight.

c. In the latter part of the film, Carrie felt that Hurstwood was becoming more and less progressive, more and more decadent, and their lives were hard to maintain. She felt very sorry for Hurstwood and ruined his life.

d. In the second half of the film, as a result of their own life is more and more difficult to maintain, one day Hurstwood dress is very capable,.In a very decent gentleman's return to Chicago to see his son, when he came back, he found that Carrie had gone. And left him a note to tell him that he wanted him to find his son and then live his life. But in the novel Carrie did not feel guilty to Hurstwood, but simply told Hurstwood that she left and left 20 .

e. In the film, Carrie left Hurstwood and felt very sad and cried, and she felt sorry for her.But Carrie didn't feel sorry for leaving Hurstwood in the novel.

f. At the end of the film, Carrie became the most popular actress and still forgot Hurstwood, and after a few attempts to find Hurstwood,?When she saw Hurstwood had a very bad time, she felt more sad and sad, and she hoped that Hurstwood could go back with her to have a good day.And he gave Hurstwood a sum of money. But in the novel Carrie didn't go to Hurstwood in the end.

g. At the end of the film, Hurstwood did not accept Carrie's request to take him out of the slum, and he did not accept the money that Carrie gave him. He just took Carrie's one dollar and left. But in the novel, Hurstwood ended his life with gas at the end of a cold winter night, and he and Carrie did not see the last one.

Comparing the whole novel and the film, perhaps the biggest difference is that Carrie in the film has more feelings for Hurstwood than in the novel, and Carrie is more warm in the film.Compared with this, Carrie in the novel appears to be so cruel. In the film, Hurstwood had lived in the upper class and gave up everything for love; What is done for a lover is not a condition to bind her; When the most impoverished, there is no other way to find the lover but did not take the large bills she gave, only a small coin may be enough for him to survive; When the woman wants to make up for her mistakes, he knows that everything is in the past tense, and will not go back; When I left, I looked in the mirror, and I thought it was the last thing he wanted to see.

Ⅱ.The perception of sister Carrie

"Sister Carrie" just looked very deep, and Carrie's change even though it is shocking, but I am more concerned about the fate of the tragedy.Especially after he killed himself. He felt sorry and regret at the same time, thinking that his life had been reversed, and in fact, suicide was the best outcome for him.

The success of a person is far from being able to rely on hard work or integrity.Carrie had a prominent position with her beauty and her body, and though she had a strong heart, she had a complaint with Du Luai and, but who cares? What people see is just the result. As he stole the money from the bar, in spite of his regret, even though his wife's multi-economic oppression and alcohol, he lost his senses and was carried away by greed? He finally had to return the money.Even so, who cares about his heart, who cares why he stole money?Social public opinion will only make him a thief. After he was determined to be a thief, no matter how he defined himself, he would be getting worse and worse.Because he lost his circle of friends, lost his trust, coupled with the impact of the social environment, the tragedy of hesiwo.

The two men committed Sister Carrie have not been her heart, not to mention the real understanding of her inner world. Almost all progress in the relationship between men and women in the story is to rely on male strong action, while Carrie's performance is nothing less than the passive default half or her motive and purpose What is done cannot be undone., never show it, not to mention the true inner thoughts of communication. Her expression is mostly, courteously but without sincerity feign ignorance or simply kept silent. The relationship with her derouet and Hearst Wood of the two men in the end, only one thing is certain: the man with the promise of marriage for her body, and she used the body for more quality commitment. All she cared about was the issue, concerned about the stability, sustainability, and profitability of the deal. Her relationship with the men was nothing but a continuation of her job search and another form of life.

The turning point of the story is that Hurstwood stole the bar money cheat Carrie away.

Hurstwood was troubled by family problems and problems with Carrie. One day, back to the care bar, the cash register locked by the accountant wasn't shut. His first reaction was to feel strange and wanted to shut it off. Second Nian is evil, he wanted to see how much money.

Struggling, he looked, and found that much money, more than half of his life, the psychological imbalance began. Then he thought, with the money, all the difficulties are solved: he can leave the nagging wife, and Carrie is far away, he can get the money to do business, life is not a problem.

But he also thought about the risk of doing so; he might have been caught before he arrived in Canada; Carrie might not want to go with him; so he would have lost his interpersonal and social status throughout his life; he could not bear the newspaper's revelation of his guilt and so on.

In essence, Hurstwood is not a particularly tough person. He's just an ordinary man who happens to be a middle class, and if developed, he's early developed. He wanted to run away because he didn't want to solve the current problem. He wanted to escape. He didn't want to face it.

Finally, he took the money and told Carrie that Drouet was injured and had to go by train immediately. He was also lucky to arrive in canada. But the detective and his conscience made him weak: he returned more than 9000, leaving only a small part. He can neither be upright nor bad.

With the money, they went to New York. New York is different from Chicago, and it's written well:

In Chicago the two roads to distinction were politics and trade. In New York the roads were any one of half-hundreds, and each had been diligently pursued by hundreds, so that celebrities were numerous. The sea was already full of whales. A common fish must need disappear wholly from view-remain unseen. In other words, Hurstwood was nothing.

A former bar manager who feels good comes to New York as a drop of water drops into the sea. At this point he did not want to admit his insignificance. After the decline of the bar partnership, he tried to find a job, but because he couldn't pull the face down, he dragged the day by day. At first he would go out in uniform and fight for himself, and then he would not go out, change into old clothes, hold newspapers, and see the evening one day.

Hurstwood, after all, is an old man who doesn't want to start like a young man, who starts from a low, not a particularly talented person, plus his shadow of theft, so that he can't use his previous interpersonal relationship. His fight began to wane, and his love for Carrie cooled at the same pace, and at last he cared little.

The love for Carrie was sweet after eating. It was wonderful. But dessert becomes bread, it's not the same thing. Carrie realized the change of Hurstwood and realized his weakness, humbleness and cowardice. But she endured, and thought of leaving, she was nothing but poverty.

Carrie can't help feeling disgusted. Although it seems that Carrie is too realistic and materialistic, she thought that she could not buy new clothes and shoes, rather than the daily necessaries of life. But I think what she hates is Hurstwood's self abandonment, hard work and self deception.

So it's not surprising that Carrie finally left the Hurstwood. Hurstwood also does not have what feeling, just muddle along. After leaving, Carrie's photography career became more and more prosperous, and her posters appeared in newspapers, magazines and streets. Hurstwood saw this and thought Carrie was getting farther and farther away from him, but he had not lost his self-esteem, and he didn't want to ask Carrie for the cost of living, and he said to himself that he would be OK.

At last, he didn't have a single son, and he didn't even have a place to live, and he fell into the abyss of poverty. Like other tramps, he went begging, going to welfare homes, monasteries to receive relief, and to wait outside the bakery waiting for free bread. He even found Carrie and asked her for money.

Poverty is a cancer. From the rich life fell into the lives of the poor, not only is the degradation of the material, or mental. Self esteem is lost to the needs of existence, and is transformed into shameless and shameless. Poverty first binds man's hands and feet, then conquers man's mind, makes his mind paralyzed, and finally poisons every cell in his body. Then, people will be able to climb up again and return to normal life as before, never deny the poor rich social recognition, see see the low step climb, rich and poor, run the same basically not in line; secondly, the people themselves have to accept their fate, or the social despair, it is difficult to come up with ten the courage to struggle, to labor times.

See here, can not help but feel sympathy for Hurstwood heart. His circumstances were poor, but a great part was his own. He didn't want to look for a job, just like he did when he took the guy, just to avoid the problem. Now many people resent the society for not giving opportunities, the gap between the rich and the poor, the fierce competition and so on. But, from another angle, whether the person who is resentful has made the greatest efforts? If one side of the house, underappreciated, this type of Hurstwood, the pain is to blame. If he had done his best, like the escaped death of the Earl of Monte Cristo, like Jean Valjean in the miserable world, he would not have fallen into such a position. Hurstwood is just a mediocre, poor and hateful.

Lack of material is sad, then is material abundance happiness? The author answers the mood after Carrie's rise to fame. Carrie got what she had never thought of before, and she became rich, got into the upper class, and was pursued by many people. But she's always single, calm and lonely. She sympathized with the poor and donated most of her money. Is she happy? She's not happy, isn't she happy? Neither。 Life makes this longing for the material girl, understand the meaning of life - absolute happiness is not, people are always satisfied. Money, status, and gorgeous clothes are not the representatives of happiness. Comparatively speaking, people's intelligence and talent are brought into play and sublimated, which is more profound than the joy of material.

The paragraph of the end is very suitable for the summary of sister Carrie's life.

Oh, Carrie, Carrie! Oh, blind strivings of the human heart! Onward, onward, it saith, and where beauty leads, there it follows. Whether it be the tinkle of a lone sheep bell o'er some quiet landscape, or the glimmer of beauty in sylvan places, or the show of soul in some passing eye, the heart knows and makes answer, following. It is when the feet weary and hope seems vain that the heartaches and the longings arise. Know, then, that for you is neither surfeit nor content. In your rocking-chair, by your window dreaming, shall you long, alone. In your rocking-chair, by your window, shall you dream such happiness as you may never feel
