There is a widespread stereotype that every Chinese kid plays at least one musical instrument. It seems to be true.
On the flamboyant evening of the Students』 Talent Show, all the students and faculty members sat on the ground of stadium and widened our knowledge in the music world. A great variety of instruments from both China and West were played last night, for example, harmonica, guitar, electronic organ, and Western concert flute. What’s more, I believe it was the first time most people had ever heard a Japanese melody played by ocarina, an ancient wind vessel flute made from clay in Asian and Mesoamerican cultures. The sound of the ocarina was so deep and peaceful.
Enthralled with the Tai folk dance Blossom Blooming within Rain performed by Katharine Zhao from Class D, we enjoyed a lot her light and graceful movement which imitated a peacock. Katharine wore a gorgeous costume of Tai ethnic minority group with a translucent embroidered umbrella holding in her hand, dancing as if she was a fairy or nymph. At the end of the show, the Pop Band chorus You are Beautiful brought the atmosphere to a new height.
Thanks to all the talented students and their flairs, we had a grand feast of music. Music is the universal language of mankind. It connects us, enlightens us, and nourishes us.
And the night shall be filled with music,
And the cares that infest the day
Shall fold their tents like the Arabs
And as silently steal away.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
