Skeleton at the feast
 skeleton at the feast這條短語最初出現在英國，在使用過程中流傳到了美國和其他英語國家。從這條短語的字面意義上來看很難理解，甚至有與情理相悖之嫌，因為 feast 一詞指的是「盛大的宴會」，而 skeleton 是指「（不吉利的）骨骼殘骸」。

據英國著名詞源學家布留沃在他所著的《英語成語辭典》中解釋：在古埃及很久以前就有這樣一種習俗，當客人接到一份出席盛大宴會的請帖去赴宴時，在大廳顯眼之處張掛的不是鮮花或美麗的裝飾，而是一具令人毛骨悚然的骷髏。這可不是什麼故意惡作劇捉弄各位賓客，而是主人叫人這樣做的。這具骷髏提醒人們在喜慶的時刻莫要忘記危險，幸福與憂患是共存的。

根據這一解釋，我們可以將這一短語同漢語中的「居安思危」聯繫在一起。不過這條短語現在的意義與它的初始含義已有了較大的區別，人們經常用它表達「令人生厭，掃興的事」。

例如：

Never talk about a dangerous thunderstorm with a sailor before he begins a new voyage at the sea, which will be thought of as a skeleton at the feast.

千萬別在水手出航之前對他說海上風暴有多麼危險，這是最令他討厭的話題。
