About the Project
In the laboratory of Biophysical Engineering, the Institute of Industrial Science, at the University of Tokyo, Japan, we have an open project for PhD students.
Polydiacetylene (PDA) is a conductive polymer that has mechanochromism. Upon perturbation, PDA changes its structure, which results in altering the electronic band gap, thus its optical and electrical properties. The material has potentials for applications such as biosensors and cell membrane force sensors. We study the structure and the fundamental mechanism behind the mechanochromism of PDA by combining several spectroscopy methods, atomic force microscopy, and optical microscopy. It will allow us to determine the key parameters that govern the mechanochromism and to design the second-generation polymer that has desired sensitivity range or efficiency for each application.
