今天，我們的主角是大不列顛及北愛爾蘭聯合王國，就是我們常說的英國。
As usual, first to introduce the flag. 按照慣例，我們先來看看它的國旗。
我們常見的是這一張，俗稱「米字旗」
不過這個最初的時候，它可不是這樣的哦。
That’s a long story about the history.
這是歷史長河中的一個冗長故事。
At first, let's look at the map.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland contains England,Scotland,Wales, and Northern Ireland.
首先，我們先來看看英國的地圖，它的疆域包含英格蘭，蘇格蘭，威爾斯和北愛爾蘭。
So the Union flag stands for these lands' elements.
其實聯合國旗是這些地方元素的集合。
As we know, the flag is based on Red Cross and X cross.So let’s talk about them.
我們可以看到，旗幟是基於紅十字和X十字的，那麼我們先來談談它們。
Long long ago, there was a devil dragon destroyed many villages and killed too many people, then there was a (Paladin)holy Knight called George killing the dragon, after that, the blood of dragon gathered to be a red cross.
很久以前，有隻惡龍毀壞了諸多村莊，傷害了許多百姓，後來有一個名叫George的聖騎士斬殺了惡龍，惡龍的血在地面正好形成了一個紅色十字。
During the Third Crusades,in 1190, Lion Heart Richard I beat the enemies at that place where St.George killed the dragon, so he thought this victory was prayed by St.George, the Patron saint of England.
In 1200, St George flag was designed, several years later, in 1277, this flag of the red cross on white ground was regarded as Nation Flag of England.
在第三次十字軍東徵期間，1190年，獅心王理查一世在當年聖騎士喬治斬殺惡龍的地方大敗敵軍，他認為這場勝利是英格蘭守護神聖喬治的保佑才有的。後來在1200年，聖喬治旗問世，在1277年，白底紅十字的聖喬治旗成為英格蘭的國旗。
And the white X cross on blue ground belongs to Scotland,besides,X cross stands for Saint Andrew who is the Patron saint of Scotland. In 1603,James I unified England and Scotland, then in 1606, these two nation flag combined into 「MI ZI」 flag.
藍底白十字旗是屬於蘇格蘭的，白十字也象徵著蘇格拉守護神安德魯。1603年，詹姆士一世統一英格蘭和蘇格蘭，並於1606年將兩種旗幟合併成最初的米字旗。
Another red x cross on white ground belongs to Ireland, red x cross stand for Saint Patrick who is the Patron saint of Ireland.
另一個白底紅色X十字則屬於愛爾蘭，紅色X十字象徵愛爾蘭守護神，派屈克。
Two centuries later, At 1st, January, 1801, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland decided the Union flag was Three in one(Red cross on white ground+white x cross on blue ground+red x cross on white ground) ,then named Union flag, or Union Jack.
兩個世紀後，在1801年1月1日，大不列顛及愛爾蘭聯合王國決定設立聯合旗幟為白底紅十字+藍底白x+白底紅x的融合，通稱為Union flag,或Union Jack.
There are two questions about Union flag.
（1） Why is the union flag called Union Jack? 為什麼聯合旗幟也叫Union Jack？
Union 是聯合的意思，Jack除了作人名外，在海軍用語中表示懸掛在艦首的旗幟。在1588年西班牙無敵艦隊慘遭英國重擊後，英國成為海上霸主，海上軍事力量空前強大，所以聯合旗幟借用彰顯海上力量的Union Jack,同時也象徵英國島國的海洋文明及生活傳統。
（2）Why does there have no elements about Wales in the Union flag?
為什麼聯合旗幟中沒有威爾斯的元素？
剛才我們提到Union flag是英格蘭、蘇格蘭和愛爾蘭三種旗幟的融合，那為什麼會沒有威爾斯的元素呢？
There are about two reasons, 大概有兩個原因
A. It’s too late to join the meeting about designing union flag.
第一個原因，是設計旗幟時，威爾斯太晚了，沒有搭上設計專車，
威爾斯有屬於自己的旗幟，Red Dragon flag,紅龍旗，這個旗幟是到19世紀中期才開始正式使用。雖然威爾斯對紅龍的崇拜可以追溯到The once and future King- Arthur king 亞瑟王時期，但在設計Union flag時還是晚了一步。
其實除了紅龍旗之外，威爾斯還有一個旗幟也是有十字特徵的。Yellow cross on black ground,黑底黃色十字，象徵著威爾斯的守護神Saint David.不過相對比較好組合的其他線條元素和顏色搭配，威爾斯的紅龍形象與黑底黃十字也不太好組合。
B. There's no qualification for Wales to design the union flag.
第二個原因，是威爾斯沒有設計Union flag的資格。
為什麼呢？在1284年，英格蘭國王愛德華一世，徵服了威爾斯全境，並頒行了「威爾斯法」。威爾斯雖是一個獨立主體，但是卻也成為英格蘭的附庸，其地位在英格蘭、蘇格蘭、愛爾蘭之下。據說，愛德華一世接受了威爾斯人歸順的條件，同意由一位在威爾斯出生、不會講英語、生下來第一句話說威爾斯語的親王作為他們的領袖。於是，愛德華一世把行將分娩的王后接到威爾斯，而生下的王子便是第一位「威爾斯親王」愛德華二世。此後，英格蘭國王便按慣例將「威爾斯親王」的名號，授予自己的長子。而國王的長子，又是王位第一繼承人。因此，威爾斯親王的頭銜，也就成為了英國王儲的同義詞，就像現在英國女王伊莉莎白二世的兒子查爾斯王子，於1958年被立為威爾斯親王，也就是王儲。所以，在設計聯合國旗時有了英格蘭也就不會用到威爾斯元素了。
