China's healthcare digitalisation to rapidly advance: Fitch
Authorities have pledged to advance the development of online diagnosis and treatment.
To relieve current pain points and prepare for future epidemics, the digitalisation of China's healthcare system is expected to rapidly advance, according to a report from Fitch Solutions.
Electronic records, digital prescriptions and other IT infrastructure will systematically track and analyse extensive patient data, whilst AI and big data will eventually help hospitals reallocate scarce resources and improve diagnosis accuracy, Fitch noted.
The authorities have also pledged to advance the development of online diagnosis and treatment as well as internet-based hospitals, which is expected to help ease the pressure on medical institutions offline and contribute to outbreak prevention and control.
China is expected to continue benefitting from significant investment from the innovative pharma industry.
"Whilst the Chinese pharmaceutical market continues to face uncertainty on the back of challenges around drug pricing and the low levels of intellectual property protection, we maintain our view that it presents one of the most attractive investment destinations in the Asia Pacific region," the report stated.
China’s healthcare system is also expected to see a greater integration of technology, which can help address the uneven geographic distribution of medical resources in the country.
The report noted that doctors in China continue to be concentrated in provincial capitals as compared to local level community healthcare centres – limiting healthcare access in the rural regions.
"Moreover, China’s healthcare system also grapples with a shortage of doctors, exacerbated by low wages and a lack of local clinics and general practitioners. In the country, there are only 1.5 doctors for every 1,000 people, compared with 2.5 for every 1,000 in the US," Fitch added.
The pandemic has also prompted the digital transformation and innovation in China's healthcare industry. The industry has adopted a new generation of digital technologies, including cloud computing, big data and artificial intelligence.
In 2019, China's pharmaceutical market is estimated to be valued at $149.7b (CNY1.03t), climbing 5.5% from the previous year. In 2020, the market is projected to grow 3.2% to $149.37b (CNY1.07t).
