Detectives in France, Italy and Tunisia are investigating a 21-year old Tunisian being held in hospital on suspicion of killing 3 people in a church in the southern French city of Nice. It was reported that he arrived in Europe only last month in Italy. The suspect allegedly tried to behead one of his victims. He was shot by police. President Emmanuel Macron has called the attack Islamist terrorism. A leader of the French Council of the Muslim Faith says he has strongly condemned the killings and urged Muslims to scrap their celebrations for the prophet Muhammad’s birthday to show solidarity with the victims.

UN’s Migration Agency says it is now known that at least 140 people died in a shipwreck off Senegal on Saturday. It is the deadliest such incident anywhere in the world this year.
