Chapter 1
《一個都沒剩下》
There Is No One Left
When Mary Lennox was sent to Misselthwaite Manor to live
with her uncle,
she was a little thin child.
Her hair was yellow,
and her face was yellow because she
had been born in India and had always been ill.
Her father had worked in the
English Government and had always been busy.
Her mother had been a great
beauty who always went to parties.
She had not wanted a little girl at all,
and when Mary was born she asked a nurse to take care of her.
The nurse let Mary do whatever she wanted,
because she did not want her to cry and make her mother angry.
Mary soon became a spoiled and selfish little girl.
One hot morning, when she was about nine years old,
when she awakened,
she felt everything strange.
Her nurse did not come to her.
This made her very angry.
At last, she wandered out into the
garden and began to play by herself under a tree.

不久，瑪麗就成了一個自私嬌慣的小女孩。
在她差不多9歲時，一個炎熱的早晨，
她醒來覺得一切都很奇怪。
她的保姆沒來服侍她，這讓她非常惱火。
最後她遊蕩著出去，來到花園裡，在一棵樹下自己玩起來。
Suddenly, she heard her mother come out of the
house with someone.
She was with a fair young man and
they stood talking together in low strange voices.
Mary knew the fair young man was a very young officer
who had just come from England.
「Is it so very bad? Oh, is it?」 Mary heard her mother say.
「Yes,」 the young man answered in a trembling voice.
At that very moment a loud sound of crying
broke out from the servants』 house,
and Mary stood trembling from head to foot.
「What is it? What is it?」 cried Mrs.Lennox.
Someone has died,」 answered the boy officer.
I did not know!」 Mrs. Lennox cried.
「Come with me! Come with me!」
and she turned and ran into the house.
Later, Mary learned that a serious disease had broken
out and people were dying like flies.
The nurse had died and before the next day three other
servants were dead and others had run away in terror
During the confusion of the second day,
Mary hid herself in her room and was
forgotten by everyone. Nobody thought of her;
nobody wanted her.
Mary cried and slept through the hours.
She only knew that people were ill and that she
heard mysterious and frightening sounds.
Once she went into the dining-room and found it empty.
The child ate some fruit and biscuits,
and being thirsty she drank a glass of wine on the table.
It was sweet, and she did not know how strong it was.
Soon after she returned to her room,
she felt so sleepy that she
could hardly keep her eyes open.
She lay down on her bed and knew nothing
more for a long time
突然，她聽到媽媽和什麼人一起從屋裡出來。
她和一個帥小夥在一起，他們站在那裡奇怪的低聲說話。
瑪麗知道帥小夥子是個年輕軍官，剛剛從英國回來。
「這麼嚴重嗎？噢，是嗎？」瑪麗聽見媽媽說。
「是的，」年輕人用顫抖的聲音回答。
就在這時，從僕人的屋裡響起了很大的哭號聲。
瑪麗站在那裡，渾身顫抖。
「什麼事啊？什麼事啊」倫諾克斯太太喊道。
「有人死了，」年輕的軍官回答。
「我還不知道啊！」倫諾克斯太太哭喊著。
「跟我來！跟我來！」她轉身跑進房子裡。
後來，瑪麗得知一種嚴重疾病爆發了，人們像蒼蠅一樣紛紛死去。
保姆死了，沒到第二天另有三個僕人又死了，其他的人都恐慌地逃走了。
第二天，在一片混亂中，
瑪麗藏到自己的屋子裡，被大家遺忘了。
沒有人想起她來，沒有人想要她。
在那段時間，瑪麗時而大哭，時而睡覺。
她只知道大家生病了，自己也聽到神秘可怕的聲音。
有一次，她來到飯廳，發現裡面空無一人。
孩子吃了些水果和餅乾，因為渴了，就喝了桌子上的一杯酒。
酒是甜的，她不知道酒勁兒多大。
她回到自己的房間後不久，便困得幾乎睜不開眼睛。
於是，她躺到床上，好長時間什麼也不知道了。
When she awakened she lay and stared at the wall.
The house was perfectly still.
No one came.
Then she heard footsteps outside.
They were men’s footsteps.
「That pretty woman! I suppose the child, too.
I heard there was a child, though no one ever saw her,」
she heard one voice say.
Mary was standing in the middle of the room
when they opened the door a few minutes later.
The first man who came in was a large officer
she had once seen talking to her father.
He looked tired and troubled, but when he saw her he was
so surprised that he almost jumped back
「Barney!」 he cried out.
「There is a child here! Who is she?」
「I am Mary Lennox,」 the little girl said,
「I fell asleep and have only just wakened up.
Why does nobody come?」
「It is the child no one ever saw!」 cried the man.
「She has actually been forgotten!」
「Why was I forgotten?」 Mary said.
「Why does nobody come?」
The young man whose name was Barney looked at her very sadly.
「Poor little girl!」 he said. 「There is nobody left to come.」
That was how Mary suddenly found out that
she had neither father nor mother left.
They had died and been carried away in the night,
and the few native
servants who had not died also had left the house.
There was no one in the house
but herself. That was why he was sent to her uncle,
Mr. Archibald Craven, in England.
她醒來後，躺在床上，眼睛盯著牆。
房子裡一片寂靜，沒有人進來。
然後，她聽見往外面響起腳步聲，是男人的腳步聲。
「那個漂亮女人！我想還有那個孩子。我聽說有個孩子，不過沒人見過她，」
她聽到有一個聲音說。
幾分鐘之後，他們打開門的時候，瑪麗正站在房子中間。
第一個進來的男人是個高個子軍官，她曾見過他和她父親說話。
他顯得又疲憊又不安，可是他看到她的時候，吃驚得幾乎跳了回去。
「巴尼！」他喊了起來。
「這兒有個小孩兒！她是誰？」
「我是瑪麗·倫諾克斯，」小女孩說。
「我睡著了，剛剛醒過來。怎麼沒有人來啊？」
「這就是那個誰都沒見到的孩子！」男子喊道。
「居然把她忘記了！」
「怎麼把我忘了呢？」瑪麗說。「為什麼沒有人來呢？」
那個叫巴尼的年輕人非常悲傷地看著她。
「可憐的小孩子！」他說，「沒有人能剩下來了。」
就這樣，瑪麗突然發現自己沒有爸爸，也沒有媽媽了。
他們在夜裡已經死去，被抬走了，
那幾個沒死的當地僕人已經逃離了房子。
房子裡除了自己，誰也沒有。
所以，她就被送到在英國的舅舅阿奇博爾德·克雷文那裡。
